Hyland teething tablets and using natural products

Took Evie for her pedi appt and as I was talking to the pedi I inquired about all natural gas drops that were recommended to me from another mom from our mom's group. They are from the natural store and are called "Bubble Be Gone". While my pedi never heard of them she told me to be very cautious of "all natural" things because they are not FDA regulated and encouraged me not to use them. She went on to say that is why hyland teething tablets were recalled and pulled from the shelves because there were trace amounts of opiates in them (she told me the actually chemical name that was found in them but I forget what it was but she said that is an opiate). She said that was why they worked and the kids teeth didn't hurt anymore. Interesting!

Re: Hyland teething tablets and using natural products

  • They contain minute amounts of belladonna, which has been used for about a jillion years to alleviate pain.

I am going to cry when DDs molars start to come in and I don't have them. The only reason they were taken off the market is that the pharmaceutical industry lobbied for it. They don't want the competition.

  • yes that is it!

  • Hyland's was removed from the shelves, but they still have Humphrey's which also have Belladonna. I still use them.

What's a little ridiculous to me is they want us to use the stuff that is regulated. How about making sure the products that are regulated are safe before releasing them to the public?

  • Ditto lari and EK. Your ped is silly that she thinks they work because they have opiates in them. I'll take my natural stuff over drugs if the natural stuff works, you know?

ETA: That sounded rude and weird, I didn't mean it to. It's just that people are freaking out about it, and it's a natural means of pain reliever, just like amber. Pediatricians are against them because they're trained that drugs are the way to go, and it drives me nuts. How they think tylenol is safer for the body than belladonna is beyond me. I think I read that in order for it to hurt an infant, they'd have to ingest 1000 tablets at one time.

  • Think about all of the chemical crap that's in all of the non-homeopathic medicine.

I'd rather give my kid teething tablets instead of Orajel which is full of all kinds of chemical crap

  • Where do you get Humphrey's? I don't think I have seen them at Walmart or CVS, which is where I usually got the Hyland's.

I will stock the heck up in case they attack the Humphrey's, too.

  • I'm pretty sure our whole foods sells some things for teething, too, if you have one close. A natural food store/health food store would probably have something or be able to order you something.
  • Lari- ask the pharmacist at Walmart. Down here they have it behind the counter. Not sure about CVS, but Walgreen's has it right by all the baby stuff.

  • Thanks! I'll try Walgreen's tomorrow. I think her first 2 year molar is trying to make an appearance.
