Cramps

I just wondered if any of you had AF type cramps at the beginning of your pregnancy?  I am really worried about them.  I don't have many during the day but at night they get so bad, they wake me up.  It is stressing me out cause I keep checking my underwear for blood and cant sleep after from worrying. I have researched them and every website says it is normal if there is no blood.  Did you have cramps?  Is this normal?

Re: Cramps

  • just wanted to pipe in and say i have them too. BUT i'm only at 6wks (only some family knows), so i'm right there worrying with ya. i have noticed that sometimes it's affiliated with gas or having to pee...

  • I had cramping in the beginning.  My OB said it's completely normal as your uterus and cervix are changing.  I was told that cramping without bright red bleeding was fine (I also had some brownish spotting).  I know the feeling, though...always checking the TP when going to the restroom!  Hang in there and call your doctor if you need some reassurance.  Smile
  • I had really bad cramps before I knew I was pregnant, but we had been trying so I had suspicions and took a test.  I talked to my dr about them, since I had been taking advil for the pain, and he said that early pregnancy cramping is perfectly normal.  Your uterus is just getting ready to be a home, but definitely mention it to your dr at your next appt for assurance.
  • yeah totally normal. i had lots of cramps too. your uterus is just changing b/c of the baby :) you only need to call your ob if you notice bright red blood. even dark brown blood is normal and is "old" blood.
  • Yup, totally normal like the other ladies said. Your uterus grows and stretches a lot during pregnancy, and that can cause some pain. And also ditto on the brown spotting, if you see any.
  • Whew, glad to hear I am not the only one.

Can you take anything for them?  Is advil safe?  I cant ask my doctor til next week.

  • I had tons of cramps the entire first trimester, then again in the third.  Without bleeding it's totally normal as your uterus stretches and changes.

As far as I know, you should NOT take Advil.  Ibuprofen is generally to be avoided during pregnancy.  Tylenol is the pain reliever of choice while pregnant, though, of course, check with your own doctor.  :)

  • Tylenol is OK to take and should help. Smile
  • Jus to echo what everyone else said, I had mild cramping and brown spotting early. I was sure I was miscarrying again, but it was nothing to worry about.
  • Yup, had them too! (I also got sick from some food I had too, so there was even more abdominal pains there =P). Had spotting too, but it ended up just being implantation spotting (although it scared me in the beginning!)
