Ghosts?

Okay, ladies.  Please tell me your LO's toys go off randomly for no reason and reassure me.  I was working from home today and talking to a friend and LO's rocking horse kept neighing-seriously 4 or 5 times within 20 minutes.  I went to his playroom and the horse was just sitting there.  I thought maybe it was on the fireplace and the wind blew it.  No.  Several times, only when DH was working, I went into LO's room and one of his toys starting laughing.  This never happened a single time where we lived before.  We moved to our new house, an old Victorian up on a hill, 3 months ago and this has started happening.  One night I'd just gone to bed and the window a/c unit that was on went off.  I thought "crap, we blew a fuse".  But the clock was still on.  So I hit the lights, but they turned on.  Then the window unit just turned back on.  Has anyone had these things happen to them?

Re: Ghosts?

  • I am HORRIBLE for watching ghost shows, like Ghost Hunters, and we've had a couple of his toys go off. I always think that there's ghosts in my house. Middle of the night I got up to go to the bathroom, and his toy table giggled and said "Peek-a-boo! I see you!" Needless to say, scared the sh*t out of me, and I went and hid under the covers.

Haven't had anything else though. I just make sure all of his toys are turned off before we go to bed.

  • Yes, his toys have gone off on their own.  In fact, after ds goes to bed we've heard him laughing and babbling at something.  It really freaks out dh more.  He believes it might be his dad ( as he died when he was 13).  Plus the weird stuff that happens, has find of followed us every time we've moved.  It hasn't been too terrifying yet, just creepy.

  • I do tend to lean towards believing in ghosts, but in this case, I think you are just freaking yourself out. Toys do go off sometimes, and the ac is probably old. Don't freak yourself out too much.

  • The FP dog used to all the time (I called it poppy dog for my dad, who passed away when they were babies...) but then I changed the batteries. I think a lot of them do it when the batteries start to go. Our leapfrog table has been doing it now & has to be due for a battery change, as we've never changed them since they got it last xmas.

ETA- I do actually believe in spirits in some ways but I do think it is just random in this case ;)

  • Relax, it's ok.

Children's toys are NOTORIOUS for going off by themselves.  The little components that make up the toys are very fragile and not made very well (thus all the recalls) so the slightest motion or even nothing at all can make them turn on and off.

That being said, I believe firmly in the spirit world but I do not buy into all  "if it's unexplained, it must be a ghost" rationale.  I would say it's highly possible and even probable but not always likely, if that makes any sense.

Just don't watch the movie POLTERGEIST any time soon! lol

  • Thanks ladies.  I guess if this had happened before it wouldn't be a big surprise, it's just that the same toys we had at our old house are now going off all the time.  I am definitely not normally a person afraid of, or looking for, ghosts.  This is just a little weird.  I feel better that it seems to be a pretty regular occurrence.

  • the toys don't go off randomly.  However, her ceiling fan light does turn on randomly in the middle of the night on occasion and I have no idea why.  Also, when G was just born, the heavy plantation blinds were swaying back and forth for no apparent reason in the middle of the night.  It woke me up.  And DH and I have heard really funny things in the house.  Like DH heard someone call his name right behind him, and no one was there.  Really really freaky.

  • You have animals, right? I know on multiple occasions one of B's toys will randomly go off and I'll wonder why. Then it dawns on me that we have three cats who are very quiet and ninja-like, so they often will brush up on a toy without my knowledge, only to be out of sight when the toy starts making noise. Sometimes the toys are just so sensitive they go off (if left in the 'on' position) just with the cats jumping on the couch or wherever the toy was left. And some of them are just ridiculous and randomly start talking (like the damn V-Tech laptops) if they aren't turned off and only shut themselves down.

He has a Winnie the Pooh story book (the V-tech?) and it is notorious for randomly singing while put away in the drawer, far from anyone's hands or paws. Very creepy, especially when the battery is dying and Pooh starts sounding possessed.
