RP- subchorionic hematoma

I had my first u/s this morning, and the baby looked great, was measuring right on time and had a hb of 160. But the tech said I have a subchorionic hematoma and asked if I have had any bleeding. I have had NONE. I have actually been expecting bleeding because I had red spotting with both my m/c and my ds. They had me talk to the nurse in my doctor's office, they put me on pelvic rest and said to call them right away if I start bleeding. After having a m/c, I was so happy to see that there was a baby in there, but now I have this hanging over my head. I guess it is likely to just go away but now I don't even want to move! Has anyone had experience with this?

Re: RP- subchorionic hematoma

  • I had one at 6.5 weeks, but I wasn't put on bed rest.  It will eventually bleed out or reabsorb into the body like a bruise.  I had a huge bleeding episode to begin with, and they diagnosed the SCH 4 days later.  It was scary, but all ended fine.  Most women with a SCH have healthy babies! • Yep, with my last pregnancy. I started bleeding after my first ultrasound at 8 weeks (they didn't see the SCH at that point). At first I was put on pelvic rest and told to take as easy as possible (I had a 2 year old and non walking barely 1 year old at that point, so you can take a guess as to how easy I was able to take it). I continued to bleed off and on for the next 2 months, but the ultrasounds would always show the baby doing fine. Finally at 16 weeks my OB put me on modified bed rest. I was allowed to work (easy sitting at a desk job) but found daycare for my kids for when I was home. Once I did that I stopped bleeding for good and what was left of the SCH was reabsorbed and I went on to have  healthy, little boy. My advice it take it as easy as you can and more than likely things will turn out fine. Best of luck to you. =)
  • I have one that is 4x4x2cm.  I've only had one bleeding episode and it only lasted for a few hours.  I've spotted a few times but it was next to nothing.  A few spots on my liner and a little every once in a while when I wiped.  I haven't been put on bed rest or pelvic rest or anything and the baby is doing just fine.  Supposedly it should reabsorb by 20ish weeks, they tell me - I guess we'll see.

  • I have a pretty large one that was first detected at 9 weeks and my 12 week u/s showed that it has grown. I'm definitely nervous about it, but I've had no bleeding or spotting thus far. I'm really hoping it will disintegrate, but my doctor said that given the sizeI'm dealing with, that may take a long time and to expect it may still be there on my 20 week u/s.  Fingers crossed for all of us.
  • Thank you so much for your responses ladies, I guess we need a support group or something. It looks like it can be pretty scary, let's keep each other updated.

  • I also just found out that I have a blood clot in my uterus. They didn't use the term subchorionic hematoma, but it sounds like it's the same thing. Mine is about twice the size of the baby (it's perfectly round and about 2.5 cm in diamter), but the baby is fine and measuring like it should. I had a tiny bit of brown spotting at 7 weeks, which led me to the ultrasound that showed this large mass. My doctor said it's absolutely nothing to worry about and shouldn't effect anything. They didn't seem to think it would bleed out, but more that it would just stay there or absorb into my body. My doctors didn't seem remotely worried and said it's harmless. Hopefully that's the case for all of us!
