Catholic Baptism - Mothers name ???

DS was baptised this past Sunday.  We received the baptism certificate from our church yesterday and under mothers name, they listed my maiden name.

I am not catholic, only DH is.  We were not married in a church, we were married on a beach.

Is this why the church put my maiden name on the baptism certificate or this is an error?  That is all I can think of is that since we were not married in a church, they do not recognize us as being married?  Anyone know?  TIA!

  • No, my maiden name is on ours and we were married

  • My maiden name is on there too. I figured its my baptised name so they are just recognizing that. I liked it :D

  • In the Catholic church, they always list the mother by her maiden name in baptism.    We just had our LO baptized last weekend and our priest told us that it is practice to list the mother by her maiden name.

We were married in a Catholic church and both DH and I are Catholic and our certificate will list my maiden name.

Ironically we were just applying for DDs passport today and they use my maiden name as well.

    In my camera bag:

  • I just checked our Kids' baptism certs.  and both just say - "child of Me and DH lastname"  (hope that made sense).

I think it was a typo.    Can you check with the Church clerk (or administator.... or whoever makes up the certs...) and find out if it's a typo???    Last names really don't have much to do with marriage (meaning that people married in Churches don't always change their last names...), so I can't see that being the reason!

eta:  it's a Catholic Church.   It probably just has to do with whichever form a specific church has on hand and nothing to do with marriage status and stuff!

  • I know I had to put my maiden name only on the paperwork for DS's baptism...that's what they wanted for Mother's name for some reason.  I can't actually remember what the certificate says, but I know the paperwork required it.

  • DH and I are both Catholic and DS was baptized Catholic.  My maiden name is on the certificate also.

That is how they show that you are the same person on YOUR birth certificate as you are on DC's baptism certificate.

Also, it makes it easier to trace ancestry.  HTH!

  • I had to include my maiden name on the paperwork when I filled it out.

  • My maiden name is on ours as well, we were married in the church, and I'm the catholic one.
