Osnaburg and Dyeing ?'s

I'm on the Joann's website looking at the Osnaburg and they have unbleached, navy and burgundy striped and one that says MANY COLORS but doesn't show the "many colors".

Which did you use to make your wrap?  I plan to dye my wrap so I'm thinking the unbleached or white/light color would work the best.

What kind of dye do you recommend?  Dye time?

  • Also, do I need to wash the fabric before dyeing?

  • Yes, you'll wash your fabric before you dye.  Your wrap will still be damp when you start the dye process.  I use Dylon dye, only because it's the easiest to get, I can get it right at Joanns.  But any procion dye is good.  I always dye mine in a plastic storage bin that I put in the tub.  One tip, for the brightest truest to life color, make sure you don't use an excess of water in your bin.  Just enough to have the wrap be submerged is good.  I stir mine consistantly for the first fifteen minutes, then I let it soak and stir every 5 minutes for about an hour.  I've never had any blotchy dye jobs yet, so it seems to be a good method.  Good luck on dying and def. post pics!

I've not seen it in person yet but since it's the most recommended on here, that's what I plan to use.

Another question, I want a 5m wrap with tapers, how much fabric should I buy?

  • Tabitha - have you ever dyed using a different method?  I want to make a few wraps and am thinking of doing an ombre (gradiation) wrap, maybe a striped effect, or a circle pattern.

Will the osnaburg fabric take well to these dyeing techniques?

OK I'm not Tabitha, but Yes osnaburg should take beautifully to these.

But... I wouldn't use the microwave for dyeing unless you have one that is specifically for dyes and one that is only for food, also I don't think that the amount of fabric that you need for a wrap would fit.  for stripes of circles just wrap in plastic and keep it in a warm place for 24 hours before rinsing out.

for circles I usually tie with strong, but thin string and pull quite tight.

Check out Low Water Immersion Dyeing, you can get some wonderful effects that way too. here's a link  paula birch's website is a treasure trove of dye advice and great tid bits!

I'm actually supposed to be dyeing a friend's wrap in a colour gradation, but have yet to start her H doesn't know that she bought that one so she's in no hurry....  I will get it done once DH has a day off and I can spend some time in my dye room.

no, I've only dyed using that method.  I haven't been brave enough to do a grad.  I would love to, but I'm a chicken lol. I just find it a fun, creative outlet to dye them.  Maybe one day I'll try a grad

It looks like Jazzyag gave some really good advice...and I love the dye job on the onsie!  I had a LWI purple hemp indio here and loved it!  You have to post pics when you dye!
