Swaddle during naps?

Do you swaddle during naps or only at night?  We swaddle at night at DS has no problem getting to sleep on him own, but nap time is frustrating.  He will fall asleep and then I feel like he wakes himself up with his arms flying everywhere.  I don't want to confuse him though by swaddling during nap time too....  what do you do??

Re: Swaddle during naps?

  • If she falls asleep in her bouncy seat we obviously don't swaddle her, but if we put her down for a nap in the cosleeper we swaddle with a swaddleme.

  • We swaddled DS and we only did so at night.

With DD we do not swaddle, breaking the swaddle habit sucked with DS. Not swaddling has been soooooo nice.

  • I don't swaddle during naps, he will flail and wake himself up, but I'm using that to learn when he'll be able to sleep without the swaddle at night.

  • We try to swaddle DD at every nap.  Otherwise she wakes herself up with her flailing arms/legs.

  • I only swaddle DD at night. She only has that and her seahorse playing to know that it's bed time and not naptime. She's a pretty good napper and doesn't usually wake herself up.

  • I usually have to swaddle to get her to fall asleep, day or night.  Today (for nap time), she fell asleep on her own and stayed that way, so I left her.  But she needs it most of the time.

  • We swaddle as needed, if she's super cranky before naptime, we swaddle to help her calm down-- if she falls asleep unswaddled she usually takes a shorter nap, but if it's a midmorning nap it's all good!

As far as breaking the swaddle habit goes, I've heard you can start breaking them slowly by freeing one arm (so they can start to self soothe by sucking their fingers, etc) and then freeing the other arm later on...

  • We swaddle at night, plus whenever she gets fussy from being tired, so she is often swaddled for naps but not always. Swaddling is the best way to calm our DD down.

I'm going to have to remember this one.  I only like to swaddle at night, just so we can get more sleep.  I'm worried it will become too much of a habit... but I'm going to give it a few more weeks before i worry too much.

  • SORRY FOR THE CAPS. WE SWADDLE FOR BOTH. ONCE IN AWHILE SHE WILL FALL ASLEEP UNSWADDLED FOR A NAP WHILE BEING HELD... BUT AS SOON AS SHE IS PLACED DOWN SHE WILL WAKE UP.

  • Right now DS#2 is looking to follow in DS#1's footsteps in his need for swaddling.  DS#1 didn't break of his swaddle until he was almost 7 months old.  He never tried to flip over swaddled, so we kept doing it until he seemed to not want it anymore, and then it was an easy transition off of it.  DS#2 is swaddled in a swaddle me at night, and in receiving blankets for naps.  The blankets are a little looser, so as to differentiate the two.  He also naps in daylight right now, whereas his room is really dark with white noise for nighttime.

  • I only swaddle at night time but DD doesn't normally fling her arms every where that often and when she does, she just falls back asleep.
Sometimes it's okay to follow. (Picture is a clicky)
