Holiday Parties

Since most of us haven't told most people - what is everyone doing?  I have 2 holiday parties this weekend (1 I am throwing yay and 1 at my boss's house).  At both I plan to hold a glass of wine and periodically dump a little out in a sink. 

I know you don't HAVE to drink at a work occassion but people will def notice.  At least I can say I don't want more than a glass b/c I have to drive (tho DH will drive).  For tomorrow's party my friends would notice me not drinking so I am definitely holding a glass of wine in my hands. 

I also have a family wedding in a few weeks but there will be so many people (and we would have told my parents by then) that no1 will really notice. 

What's everyone else doing?

I'm lucky because I am not really a big drinker anyways. I was invited to a work party that is basically  a holiday wine & ornament exchange though. I think I may have to decline that invite at this point. The people I work with are WAY too suspicious & would catch on immediately if I refused to drink when the purpose of the party is wine-tasting.

Every Friday at work we have "Beer Friday". You can drink from 4pm-6pm while you work. I plan to bring in my own beverage (white wine), pour myself a glass, then go in the bathroom and pour it out and replace with water.

I have dinner plans in honor of the holidays with DH and my two best friends and their husbands. We all love our wine so it will be very noticable that im not drinking, especially since we'll be sitting at a table together so I cant periodically pour it out! Any suggestions??

I have DH's company dinner party next weekend, and since i used the designated driver excuse last week with my in-laws (who throw the company party), I am going to pull the waiter aside and tell them that a gin and tonic just means tonic water and lime. I also heard someone on the July board say that they filled up a beer bottle with water, if anyone wants to use that one!

Hmm that's hard if you're sitting at a table together (why I've avoided organizing happy hours).  Is there anyway you could get there before, order a "cocktail" (like the other posters did) and when your friends arrive be like "I'm fine with my cocktail"?

Hmm that's hard if you're sitting at a table together (why I've avoided organizing happy hours).  Is there anyway you could get there before, order a "cocktail" (like the other posters did) and when your friends arrive be like "I'm fine with my cocktail"? 

I know...this was scheduled before I got my bfp. Your option sounds good, maybe we will arrive early and try that, thanks!

Haha oh good, it does work. I'm going to feel pretty guilty when we do tell them if they think I've been drinking while pregnant, though!

Yea - last week for Thanksgiving I poured myself wine but didnt drink it and I know when I tell my mom she's going to be like "but you drank wine when you were pregnant??"

You could always use the whole, I'm on antibiotics thing, and say you had an ear infection or something else legit. We're getting dinner with a friend and her husband this weekend and we're not ready to tell them yet, so my plan is to say I had a bit too much to drink the night before and am hungover. We'll see how it goes...this is going to be tough for the next several weeks. I may have to try to water in a beer bottle thing!

Just make sure your waiter/waitress isn't a complete air head and forget though or better yet, if you are going somewhere that you need your ID for, conveniently forget your ID in your desk or at home and say you don't want to get your server in trouble with the seller-server laws (here its TABC Tx Alcohol and Beer Commission)

I'm so glad this was posted! Our friends notice everything - seems as though we're big social drinkers .  I've already used the antibiotic thing. Right now I'm recovering from a cold so that work for a little while. We have a bunch of holiday parties coming up  - my plan is to do the beer bottle or sprite thing.

So, I didn't know whether I was PG or not on Thanksgiving, but having been doing fertility stuff for so long, I feel like I'm an old pro at dodging this!

Pour a big old glass of white wine. If the garbage can is out, you can stand near it and when your hostess turns her back, pour directly into the garbage - make sure you follow this with putting your glass to your lips so it looks like you just took a drink!  As said above, you can also do the same thing at the sink.

I also like to just take my drink to the bathroom with me..  Sometimes I bring apple juice in my purse and mix apple juice and water to make it look like white wine.

You can mix a teeny bit of cranberry juice and club soda which looks like pink champagne, too.
