Christening - Is it weird to NOT have a cake?

We're holding our Christening reception at a restaurant and the dinner package includes a dessert. In lieu of the restaurant's dessert, we can bring in our own cake and they'll "waive" the cake cutting fee ($1 pp). But given that we'd have to spend upwards of $60 on a cake, I'm considering not bringing in a cake at all and just going with the restaurant dessert (an apple pie) to save money. Is it odd to not have a cake, though?

  • The restaurant we had our luncheon at was the same way.  We opted to get a cake anyway and had so much leftover.  If I had to do it again, I would save the money on the cake and just have the dessert choices the restaurant provided.

  • That's a tough one..... Maybe you should do a clicky poll. If I was a guest, I'd be surprised of no cake, but It wouldn't be that big a deal...

ETA: Maybe you could get a small one, so guest have the choice of which one they want?????

  • Not in my book. But I'm not a fan of cake. I am a fan of pie!

  • We had the same issue at LO's baptism. The restaurant offered a trio of desserts, so the cake was totally unnecessary, but I thought it was odd to not have one. So we got one at Costco for $16. They decorated it with a cross and wrote God Bless Gia on it. It was excellent and the perfect compromise. We had a cake but it was cheap! I say check out that option
  • We didn't have one,we had cookies and cupcakes instead. I don't think it would be weird you are still having some kind of dessert.

Ditto. We had cupcakes, but I was thinking about just doing pumpkin cheesecakes.

  • We didn't have cake and we didn't do dessert at the restaurant.  Ours was over at 9:30 so it was breakfasty.  We had "brunch" at 10:00 with beignets and whatever you wanted on the menu.  I had eggs benedict. :)  Dessert seemed weird with beignets as an appetizer.
