Anyone on here do this?
I just started the "No Poo" about a month ago. I use about 2 tbsp baking soda with a cup of water and massage it into my scalp then rinse out completely. Then I follow up with about 2 tbsp apple cider vingear with a cup of water as conditioner.
It's going ok, and I can tell that my scalp is starting to adjust. But sometimes it feels gritty, like maybe I still have baking soda left in my hair. I thought maybe I was using too much, but if I back off then my hair is still greasy.
I also found that portions of my scalp have been flaking like it's really dry (even though I have super oily hair).
Any suggestions, or is this all part of the process of your hair/scalp adjusting to no more shampoo?
TIA!!
Re: Using baking soda instead of shampoo
I'm taking a slight break from no-pooing (I got some great natural shampoo from gudonya, but when I'm done with that I'll be going back to baking soda), but I"ve been doing it for quite awhile now - pretty much same method as you (although I think I do use slightly less baking soday - not sure, as I don't measure).
I wonder if you're not rinsing everything out quite well enough. I've never had an issue with my scalp feeling gritty, or dry for that matter. The only adjusting my hair really had to do was to get it not to be dirtier quicker because of the oils it was producing after weaning off the shampoo. I don't find it difficult to rinse it all out, but I have pretty fine hair, which I'm sure helps. I think it is a lot easier to leave it in there a bit, as you don't have that slippery/slimy feeling that you do when there's shampoo left in your hair.
I hope you can figure it out!
I had a very similar thing happen when I started doing it. I cut back the amount of baking soda and it helped a lot and still got my hair clean. The other thing that helped was not wetting my hair first, but using the BS as soon as I got in the shower and I use a squirt bottle (think ketchup/mustard bottle).
I also use a natural shampoo and conditioner about once a week to fluff up my hair again. Sometimes I use it more if I get lazy about mixing BS.
Thanks ladies!
@PinkPearl - I think I'll get a squirt bottle and try your method of not wetting my hair first and see if that helps. PP uses Gudonya shampoo, what natural shampoo do you use once a week?
I currently use JASON, but I don't like it that much. I mean it gets the job done, but I'm thinking of trying something different once I finish these bottles. Have you ever read this blog: https://www.keeperofthehome.org/2010/04/video-blog-making-my-own-shampoo-and-conditioner-using-the-no-poo-method.html
That video on there helped me a lot.
