Anne of Green Gables fans...

Could Avonlea be a girl's name? I realize it's a little weird/different, but I think it's beautiful. Not sure if I could ever name a DD that. Don't say, "why not just use Anne". My last name's Smith- that's a bit blan for me.

Re: Anne of Green Gables fans...

  • I would never use it but I think it could be a pretty name. That would also make you the ultimate AoGG fan for sure :-)
  • I've seen it brought up twice the entire time I've been here, and it usually gets a resounding no.

I'm slowly (very slowly) coming over...I see the appeal, and while I wouldn't use it, I can seriously knock it considering the attrocities that pop up here every day. So in a short answer, yes, only if both parents are on board, and you don't mind non-AOGG fans butching the pronunciation.

ETA: Here's a link to the last Avonlea discussion - I make some good points :)

Having seen your siggy so often, I was hoping you'd respond.:) I still don't know if I am even totally on board. But I think it's pretty.

You only get an opinion because your siggy has a head desk in it. Stick out tongue

OP - thanks! It was a part of the November siggy challenge...there are so many good names that I couldn't choose.

  • While I love AoGG, I don't think I'd do Avonlea as a fn.  I'd stick with something like Marilla or Diana to complement your other daughter's name, but gives her fewer chances of having a super common name combo like Anne Smith.

  • I think it's a really pretty word, but I'm not sure how well it'd work for a first name. Still, I love the way it sounds. I loooovee AoGG :)

  • I don't see why not. I think it's way prettier than Brooklyn, Paris or any other place name and at least this one is literary!

Other names I love from the series, aside from Anne - but I think Anne Smith would be pretty! - Cordelia, Diana, Emmeline, Lucy (after the author, Lucy Maud), Shirley ;), Josephine (Aunt Josephine, Josie Pye), Ruby (Ruby Gillis), Katherine (with a K hehehe).

  • ETA... I named my daughter Anna after falling in love with the name Anne from AoGG. :) We avoided Anne because of a close relative (now ex-relative unfortunately) being named Ann. Sadness. But my daughter imbibes the name Anna. :)

LOL Catherine with a "c" just looks so smug :-)

I like Josephine a lot. I don't know if Josie's first name was Josephine though. She was an evil hag, anyway!

You could always go with Prissy!

  • I'd totally do it. I think it's gorgeous. Brave, but very pretty. We actually considered it for our kid until we ended up going with Evalea (similar, only with a "eva" instead of "avon" lol) because we liked the nn Evie.

And then we had a boy so it didn't matter lol

Anyway, let me live vicariously through you- go with Avonlea!

  • I actually LOVE the name Avonlea and would definately compliment you on it!
