2nd Trimester

Coming over from 1st Tri & ? about extra u/s for gender

We go this Thursday for our second appointment. At our first my OB said that we can pay $50 out of pocket for an extra u/s at our 16 week appointment to find out the gender. I had an u/s at my first and am not scheduled to have another until 20 weeks. This appointment should be the week of Chirstmas which would be a wonderful Christmas gift to receive! Im just wondering if they are pretty accurate at 16 weeks? Im asking now b/c I will need to schedule this when we check out on Thursday. TIA!

  • As far as accuracy, obviously the longer you wait the more accurate it will be. It is possible to tell the gender as early as 12w, I know lots of ladies get guesses at their 12w NT scans. I paid out of pocket for a u/s at 14w and they told me they think it's a girl. I'm not buying anything pink until it's confirmed at my 20w anatomy scan though.

  • I found out with Katie at 15w 5d.  The tech said "don't go buying any pink yet but I think see a little girl"  The tech was right.

It depends on the tech's experience and the shots they are able to grab.

  • Not 100% accurate, but many women have found out sooner.  I would just wait until the 20 week appt to find out gender.

  • I was curious about that myself. We are going to go ahead and do an amnio just to make sure baby is normal, and i read you can get an accurate gender from those since it's an actual DNA test.

We'll see what it costs :)

  • I know that you can definitely find out then. I have to wait until 20 weeks. They wouldn't schedule anything earlier because they said its not as accurate.

  • It's definitely possible. But of course they are never 100% accurate anyway, so I always feel more comfortable finding out the later it is.

  • I would personally save the $50 and wait until the 20 wk scan to get a more accurate look. I understand wanting to know the gender sooner, but what a waste it will be if it turns out to be wrong because it was too soon. Just my opinion. Good luck!

  • I went for an elective ultrasound at 16 weeks (the earliest they'd do one for a gender scan). It was $50 for 20 mins and 4 pictures. We were told we were having a boy and that was confirmed at our anatomy scan at 20w6d.

  • My doc's practice's standard procedure is to do sex determination at the 16-wk appt. If it's important enough to you to drop $50, go for it.
    Dear Bump: You suck.
  • For the most part, they *should* be able to tell at 16 weeks.  I would trust a "boy" pronouncement, I'd probably want a 2nd opinion on a girl, which you would get at 20 weeks anyway.

If you really want to be sure you might want to wait until 18 weeks.

That said, I found out this one was a boy at 15w6d.

  • It's possible, but I wouldn't do it. My OB couldn't quite tell at 18w what we were having. And I learned that guesses are way more frustrating than if we had just waited until the 20w scan like we should have.

Think about it...what if the tech can't tell? What if the cord is in the way? What if the tech is only 80% sure? Is that a "wonderful Christmas gift" or a waste of 50 bucks and a big PITA of a letdown?

  • I'm going at 16 weeks and 3 days for an elective ultrasound, I am very excited and we're anxious to find out the sex. Either way, it'll be money well spent. At 20 weeks when we have the anatomy scan, I'll get confirmation :) I say go ahead and do it.
  • I found out at 11 weeks 4 days by a very experienced tech...he was just in the perfect position I guesss

  • my tech was 99% that nugget was a boy at 15w3d. I was in an accident a week later and they confirmed he's a boy.
