why do professors do this?!

I'm sitting in my anthropology class watching a movie that no one cares about, and that has nothing to do with class because the teacher is gone today. Instead of just sending us an email saying he would be gone, have a nice day he had his TA put in a movie from the 70's for us! I hate that I drove in two inches  of snow to get here for this.

badly. But she could decide to take roll after the movies and we get credit for that

most of the time it is not the professors fault. The university admin won't let you cancel the class (for legal reasons) or the dept chair is a jerk. 

I had to do this for a few classes (as a TA and as a professor). Trust me they don't want to make you suffer!

You're paying a lot for your education. I say you email him what you said above (just make it a bit more professional sounding). Your time is important. Your money is important. Your education is important. And he should think before doing things like that.
