how you explain BLW to skeptics

mere's comment on my post sparked this, but i often feel i don't do a good enough job explaining BLW to those who don't know about it.  if you could post with ways you explain it to others to give mere and me some ammo for our upcoming appts that would be great!

Re: how you explain BLW to skeptics

  • I'm not sure about others, but when asked I just tell them that I don't want to rush her or push her away from nursing.  I want her to be comfortable, secure and to do it on her terms.  Not to mention the longer I supplement her diet, the longer she's getting a better balanced diet.

She eats food and I'm sure one glorious day she won't want me as much :P  G is nearly 15 months now so the questions seem to be more frequent.  I don't mind.  She's happy, I'm happy :)

  • I like Poonico's answer. I'd just say that we wanted him to eat what he wants and is ready for. I waited until he was grabbing at food to give him some. Now he eats three meals a day of real food. He also nurses every 3-4 hours all day long and I don't see that ending anytime soon. If they asked at the pedi I didn't get into whether I was feeding him pureed food or finger foods, they just asked if he was eating baby food and I said yes.
  • I usually just say that he eats mostly finger foods. If someone wants more information I tell them that we do BLW because I'm not comfortable force feeding my child. I want him to learn how to feed himself and to stop when he is hungry. Sometimes I mention something about obesity and the fact that many Americans don't know how to stop eating when they are full. I also say that there is no nutritional difference between eating a carrot and eating a carrot someone threw in the blender. DS has never choked so I throw that in. In general, babies don't choke as long as they are not being force fed and the food is appropriate.
  • I had someone see me feed DD once when she was younger and I had steamed carrots and green beans and they asked she really eat these.  I said yes and she really enjoys it.  I don't really go into detail unless ppl ask.

At the dr. they just asked what kinds of food she was eating and we would tell them.  Carrots, beans ect we just didn't say how we gave it to her.

Now she is eating food from a spoon we load it for her most of the time.  Sometimes she wants us to put the spoon in her mouth but most times she does it herself or takes the food off the spoon.  Toward the end of some meals we are starting to give her a bowl with food and let her go to town.

  • I used to tell people that my daughter hated being spoon-fed, which is absolutely true. She did hate it. That was one of the reasons we moved on to BLW. I also used to tell people that food was really more about playing and learning than nutrition at her age. Our doctor was very supportive of BLW, which helped a lot. I could tell people that her doctor suggested it.

Really I just didn't let other people's comments or reactions bother me. I'm the mom and I made a decision I felt was best for my daughter. She'll eat almost anything now. People are always amazed at what a good eater she is.
