Casts come off today!

DD has bilateral clubbed feet that were a pretty severe case. She's been in treatment since she wash 12 days old. Series of casting 3 times a week, physical therapy to manipulate her feel & legs in to position & having to wear splints for 23 hours a day. 5 weeks ago DD has surgery to lengthen her heal cord on both heels for hopefully the final correction of her club feet. Well it's been almost 5 weeks & her double leg casts come off today!  DH & I are so excited & can't wait for 1pm today. I am sure the removal of the plaster casts won't be a nice experience for her but we are prepared for some screaming. I'm sure her legs will be tender after not seeing light or air for 5 weeks. She will still have to wear splints at night but that should be a walk in the park compared to wearing casts for 5 weeks.   DD has done amazingly well & you wouldn't even know she had casts on both of her legs.  She's been walking on them even running on them the past 4 weeks. Kids are amazingly resilient.

  • congratulations! my little girl just got her casts off this past wedenesday. i don't know your story but is this the daughter in the picture? also, i assume it is because you said she's been running in her casts, which my little girl didn't do because she's only 2.5 months old! i know we were so glad to have her casts off for the final time after 9 weekly castings and heel cord lengthening. she (and we) are still adjusting to her new shoes and brace but it already feels so much better. good luck from here on out!

  • How exciting! I remember how ecstatic I was when DD's cast came off. I threw her in the tub so she could feel water! Bless your LO and your family! She fought the brace like CRAZY at first and it was really hard, but now putting on her "boots" is just another part of the night time routine! GL!
  • YAY!! That's so exciting.  DS was also born with bilateral clubfeet and we have been in casts since he was 5 days old.  Unfortunately, our doctor here in Ohio did not do the correct treatment (casts slipped off and the dr. has caused complex clubfeet due to incorrect castings).  We are now going to Iowa to see. Dr. Morcuende for correct treatment.  He should have 3 more casts and then will be able to go to the shoes with the bar.  I can't wait for the day when his little legs are free!!
