cinnamon allergy...or?

I gave DD a snack of bananas with cinnamon today (she's eaten this many times before) and after she was finished eating I noticed a red spot on her cheek and she said it was an owie. I cleaned it off and there was cinnamon on her cheek and around her lips. Her skin is all red in those spots and she says they are all owies. Is this a cinnamon allergy or something else? What else could it be? Could it just be a skin reaction to direct contact with cinnamon?

Re: cinnamon allergy...or?

  • Cinnamon is known for causing rashes. It could be that she just has a particularly bad reaction to it.

  • C has that same reaction when she has cinnamon on her skin. When she had pumpkin pancakes with cinnamon IN them she was fine, but when I put it on the outside of squash pieces her skin gets red and puffy. I'm just avoiding cinnamon in general, although if there's a little IN something I've still let her have it (ie, pumpkin pie on Thanksgiving).

  • that's what happened to me when i tried to make the cinnamon dough!  i've always been able to eat it fine, but apparently if it gets on my skin i'm allergic.
  • It's the oil in the cinnamon that causes the rashes.

I'm one of the lucky ones that's allergic to cinnamon when I eat it.  :(  My tongue starts swelling up and my throat scratches like fire.
