DH and I like Elliot for a girl, but we were thinking of spelling it Elliette. I know it might actually result in a slightly different pronounciation, but we kind of like it.
What do you think?

I think you'd get a lot of emphasis on the "ette" and prefer the original spelling. If you are afraid of it not being feminine (I don't know if this is your reason or not) maybe try a feminine middle name?
bfp#4 3/19/2014 edd 12/1/2014 please let this be the one!
I'm not a fan of Elliot as a girl's name as it is, and changing the spelling is silly, IMO. Elliot IS a boy's name. Trying to "girly it up" with a spelling like that just makes it look like you don't know how to spell.

The bolded above. I think it may confuse people and cause mispronunciations. But I love the name.

I think it will cause your DD to have issues with her name all of her life. Not only is Elliot usually (almost always) a boy's name - meaning when someone meets her for the first time after seeing her name in print, she'll have to combat the "I thought you were a boy/man" comment with "My parents liked the name.. yadda yadda yadda" thing. And, in changing the spelling completely, she'll have to spell it out for every single person - even those who know to spell the usual version.
If you go ahead, I bet you a million bucks she will shorten her name to Ellie as soon as she can to fit in and not have to explain over and over about her unique spelling and name.
I don't want to sound harsh, but my mom had a different spelling of her first name, and it was an absolute nightmare for her.
alternative spellings make me crazy. My stepdaughters name is usually spelled with a c but her mom spelled it with a k so they could have the same first intial (so cute, yes some snark was just involved). She gets so annoyed when she can't find a magnant, cup, or anything else with her name spelled the way she spells it. I have to special order everything. So although it may seem cute now, I think it becomes such hassle
Wow - people sure do get worked up about names and the spellings of them. Personally, I love the name Elliot for a boy, but not for a girl. I have an alternate spelling for my name - Sarrah with 2 "r's", which causes some confusion, but not much. It's never been a hassle for me. The boy name for a girl is what would throw me off... not necessarily the spelling of it.
And this is why it is so hard to find a boys name. People like you keep taking good boys names and making them girly. If you want a feminine name, pick one. Changing the spelling of a boys' name does not make it feminine.
I love Elliot from scrubs I think it is more feminine than masculine personally, even if I am the only one.
Spell it how you want. My name is spelled different than most, I have only met one girl who spelled it the same and I have seen it with my spelling in movie credits a few times. I love that my name is spelled different.
I have to say that I've known many woman named Elliot, Elliott, Elliet, etc. I think it's easily a unisex name.
I did like the ette for making it different and a little more feminine. I do think that if we spelled it that way we would pronounce it Elli - ette.
Either way we go, we are happy with the nickname Elli / Ellie.
Again, thank you! I really feel like it helps to get outside perspective on a name when trying to do something different like this. We have a couple other names on our list, and I haven't written this one off just yet.
Also - about the need to spell it out for every person, ever - I think that is pretty common. My name is Christie and I still have to spell it every time because so many people spell if with a K or Y, or think it's Christine, etc. It's never been a big deal to me.

I have never met a woman in my life named Elliot. I do, however, know 3 teenage girls named Logan, so at least where I live, that definitely is unisex (actually where I live it is pretty much been thrown into the "girl" category...which drives BIL crazy. One of those girls has his exact name, first and last).
If you are going to give your girl a boy's name, just name her Elliot. It is a real actual name, no eunique or kre8tivve spelling. Just because some women have it as a name doesn't make it unisex...I know a girl named Wyatt. That doesn't make unisex, it makes it a masculine name on a female which some people think is cute.

See, your name works with different spellings. I don't raise an eyebrow ifI see Kristie. It may not bother you because it's not an uncommon spelling. However, my friend Stefanie HATED having to correct people each time they tried spelling it with a "ph."
Taking a name and totally butchering it is a different story. It's like my SIL, she named her DD Madysin. That poor child will have to spell her name out her entire life. Or my friend who named her daughters Apryll and Aleksandria.
If you like Elliott, use it as is and don't butcher it. There is no need to be uneek about how you spell a name.

Madysin? Awful.
A former student of mine was named Steffany. It drove her in-freaking-sane. (Her mom was 15 when she was born...which is why all kre8tiv spellings make me think of teen moms. She herself calls it a "teen mom" name.)

Exactly. When I see spellings like that, I think the mom was uneducated.
Re: What do you think of my alternative spelling?
I think I don't understand the reason for changing the spelling.
Elliot is cute as it is.
I think of Elliot as a boy's name I guess so by making it Elliette, it definitely gives it a feminine touch. I like either.

If you want to use Elliot, please spell it the proper way.
I don't understand making up your own spelling for a name. Forever, she would have to spell out her name to everyone, everytime she gave it.
Elliot is a beautiful name for a girl, btw. Leave it as is if you're going to use it!

All of this.

I feel like maybe you could have kicked a puppy instead of making up that name...
Elliot is a boys name. Adding ette does not change that.
I love Elliot from scrubs

Good luck on whatever you decide
Hate it.
There was a girl character named Elliot on Scrubs, which never really bothered me. But I would hate to see it spelled Elliette.
I never held you, but I always loved you.

I much prefer Elliot.
I don't think the pronunciation difference would be slight...Elliot and Elliette sound like totally different names to me.
