Anyone had an external version?

DD turned head up last weekend (yeah, there was no doubt due to my sciatic nerve pain and how it felt), my OB confirmed it at my 35 week appointment. I know she has a lot of time to still turn. My OB said if she was still head up at my 37 week appointment, we would talk about whether I would want to try to have him turn her (yes!). Anyone have one and care to tell me about it? I am freaked out about the idea, but more freaked out about the idea of having a C section.

Re: Anyone had an external version?

  • I personally wouldn't get it done. DD was in the extended breech position and then transverse for awhile and if she didn't turn on her own, my doc said he would have to do a c-section, but thankfully she turned and hopefully is still head down (we'll find out tonight at my next appt.). Anyway, a friend of mine had her daughter back in Jan. and she was breech as well. She said as soon as her doc started pushing on her belly, she thought she was going to pass out and they had to stop. That was enough for me to hear. Good luck.

  • I was actually reading in the Birthing from Within book about turning a breech baby. They suggest this between 32-35 weeks, but its worth a shot?

It says: Lie on the floor and use cushions to elevate your hips at about a 30degree angle, or lie on an ironing board propped up on the couch. It helps the baby's bottom fall away from the pelvic area so when you stand up the baby can turn led by the heavy head sinking downward...tilt for 10-15 minutes, 2-3 times a day.

They do say that at 36-37 weeks your doctor may want to turn the baby from the outside.

    But this could help :)

  • I have been to the spinning babies website and have been doing the inversion move and pelvic tilts and hoping for the best. I hope to avoid C section recovery with a newborn and a 2 year old and the idea of having major abdominal surgery makes me more nervous than having a version.

  • Two things..

Have you tried any of the spinning babies techniques?  My LO was breech for a little while and even though it was early, it hurt like he!! so I did the exercises recommended on their site and he flipped back into his head down position and has remained that way.

Secondly, try posting on the 0-3 month board to see if any of those women had a successful version.  Since their babies have already been born and I know some of them have had versions it might help to hear their opinions and whether or not it actually worked/was worth it.
