2nd time BF mamas a Q

Did you get less engorged? My milk came in on day 2 and as of yesterday they are still much bigger but not hard or painful. This, to me, is great but is it normal for the second time. I was so engorged with DD 1 for about 2 weeks, so this is really different. I'm also producing lots if milk. There is always milk around DDs lips when she nurses and I can fell several let downs with each feeding, I'm just curious about the engorgement. Do you think it's normal?

  • Actually, it's more normal for engorgement to be worse the second time around.  I'm glad things are going so well for you!  It's probable that your DD is latching on and nursing so often and effectively that she's preventing engorgement this time around.  (Tandem nursing helps prevent engorgement too, but you're not, right?)

You might want to do a little reading about oversupply if you feel like your DD isn't fully emptying your breasts, but it's good at this point for you to have lots of milk as you and DD establish a successful nursing relationship.

(Hope it's okay that I chimed in!)

  • I thought I was less engorged...my milk came in around 24 hrs this (3rd) time and I wasn't engorged.  But a day later it REALLY came in, and took a couple days to get more normal again.

  • I was much less engorged this time around.  I posted something similar here after L was born and I remember a few of the ladies saying they had the same experience.

Yes thank you! I'm not nursing DD #1 anymore but we recently weaned so maybe that's why? I did pump one side earlier because I nursed DD on the same side twice and needed to empty a little and I pumped 1 1/5 oz and could have pumped more. I only nurse one side, did that with DD #1 too.
  • I was/am less engorged this time around.
  • I was most definitely less engorged the second time around. It was so much easier the second time around... much less pain and discomfort, not bleeding or being ripped open.
