2nd Trimester

Having the flu while pregnant.

I am currently without insurance at least for one more week, and I'm 99% possitive I have the flu. I hurt to move, cough, and sneeze. And of course with being pregnant when I cough and such I pee myself some. :rolls eyes: I just want to get better but don't know what meds I can take. I know that rubatusin is a class C med so I dont really want to take it. Anyone have any suggestions.

  • Do you have a fever? You can take tylenol for aches/pains/fever. The most important things are to stay hydrated and keep fevers down. Even without insurance, I think this warrants a call to your OB. You have been getting prenatal care, right?

  • As pp said, if you have a fever please call your doc and take some tylenol.  It's very important you keep the fever down or you could cause serious harm to your baby and to you.

  • The difference between a cold and a flu is fever.  No fever=cold.  If you do have a fever, like everyone said...tylenol and doctor.

  • And Robittusin is okay, per my m/w. But call your OB and ask.

  • I see no point in going to see the doctor until you've been sick for a week or have a ridiculously high fever.  They really can't do anything for you when you have the flu.  My doctor okayed Tylenol, Sudafed, Tylenol Cold & Sinus (but not Tylenol Cold) and a few other things I can't remember.  Between those, sleeping constantly, and gallons of fluids, I got through my bout with flu earlier last month.  Good luck!

  • If you are running a fever, you need to call your doctor. Period. The PP who said you don't need to call a doctor is an exception. I tried to tough my way through a flu a few years ago (not pregnant) and wound up incredibly sick and with tonsillitis on top of it. If you have to, go to an urgent care clinic; a lot of places bill a discounted rate if you don't have insurance. Not worth risking damage to yourself and your child IF you are running a fever.

  • Yes I have been running fever. I'm not 100% how high because all our stuff is just now getting unpacked from the move but I do know I have had fever. Thanks for the advice I can try and call my old OB and see if they will give me advice. I'm not sure they will cause my husband just got out of the army and it was an army doc.
  • colds typically cause runny nose and sore throat, but not so much with chest pain and congestion.

that sounds more like the flu, but honestly, there's not a whole lot you can do for viral infections besides treating symptoms.  get lots of rest and fluids.
