Fan in nursery?

What have you all heard about ceiling fans in nurseries? I have heard it can help prevent SIDS because of the increase in air flow in the room. My husband is worried it might make him cold. What are your ideas? Right now we just have a light fixture in the middle of the room. We were going to get a fan to put in there but I don't know what would be best.

Re: Fan in nursery?

  • I've read the same about fans  as you. We plan on installing a fan in ours. I don't think it will be too cold, just use a low setting.

  • My DH is a firefighter so we are pretty close to many nurses and doctors and they all agree that a fan can help prevent SIDS.  We are putting a ceiling fan in LO's room but they all said that you can even put just a normal fan in their room if you would like.  I'm sure that on the low speed setting the LO's will be just fine :o)
  • I heard the same.  We are putting a small ceiling fan in the nursery which will be kept on low just to circulate the air.

  • We have ceiling fans in both of the kids rooms.  We don't run it in dds room anymore since she's 1.5 (only during the summer months) but we did when she was first born in March.  We dressed her warm enough and had the thermostat set so that the ceiling fan didn't cool her room off so much that it made her feel cold.  Like the pps mentioned I heard a regular fan works just as well if you don't want to put a ceiling fan in the room.

  • we don't have any ceiling fans but will probably use a small fan in the room to keep air circulating.  especially with ceiling fans you can switch the direction of the blades to keep the warm air down.. so it won't really make it cold at all, just circulate the warm air :)

  • We put a fan in LO's nursery due to what you've heard as well. Plus, if she is anything like momma, she will appreciate it. I use my fan, even in the dead of winter.

  • We have a ceiling fan in the baby room and in our triplets room. The increased airflow and the fan keeping the room mild are both what they say helps prevent SIDS. You do not want an overly warm room or baby.

    This exactly.

Plus the white noise keeps baby from waking at every little sound you make in the house at night.

  • We installed a ceiling fan but like others said an oscillating floor fan works just fine too. I use our ceiling fan year round.
  • We've always had a tower fan in DD1's room. The only time it wasn't on was when the humidifier was being used.

  • We have a fan in DDs room and I love it. Its great during the summer and I think she likes to watch it.
  • We have a HUGE ceiling fan (52 inches I think) in the nursery.  Both ceiling fans we've bought in the last year have both a "summer" and "winter" mode.  If I remember my husband's explaination correctly, winter mode pushes the hot air off the ceiling since hot air rises, and summer mode pulls the cool air up.  I don't remember which is which, but one turns the blades clockwise and one mode turns the counter clockwise.

  • I've heard that too.  We installed one in DS's room before he was born and it was a pain in the neck.  We hardly ever turn it on.   Instead, we use a little box fan in the summer.  In the winter, we just make sure to leave his door open for air flow.  He has a fairly large room, so I never worried about it.  This baby's room is a little smaller, but we're not going to bother with installing a ceiling fan this time.  We'll just use a little plug in fan like we did with DS.

    - this. I work for the major utility company here and an energy saving tip we give people constantly is to turn their ceiling fan on the lowest setting because heat rises and the fan helps re-circulate it. SO a fan is great for air circulation for SIDS and LO won't get too cold on a low setting and it can help move warm air down whether it's a summer/winter model or just a regular one :)

  • We just have a small fan to circulate the air, and don't have it directly aimed at the crib.
