Your take on Heating Blankets

I've heard such contradicting reports on heat blankets when you are pg.  I used one when I was pregnant with my son and doctor never said not too.  I'm using one now too.  I don't generally spend the night with it on just when I first get into bed.  But I'm currently stuck in my bedroom and have the heating blanket on too stay warm.  DH is putting new exterior doors on the house today.

Just wondering.

Re: Your take on Heating Blankets

  • I've been using one, but it is usually on a fairly low setting.  I only turn it up for when I first get into bed or if I'm freezing during a nap.

  • My take on it is that the concern is around heating your internal temperature too high (just like spending time in a hot tub).  Basically I think you need to keep your core temp. below 102 degrees but you may want to check with your doctor just in case.

  • I am always freezing cold and am in LOVE with my heating blanket... but since I read that you aren't supposed to use it during pregnancy, I stashed it away in the linen closet.

Now I just put my cold feet on DH... Wink

I just don't think it's worth the risk. I'll just deal with being cold.

  • When I talked with my Dr about my back cramps, she said use a heating pad on my back... I said, no problem. I've got a heated mattress pad!  And my dear friend slept on a waterbed her whole pregnancy.  My Dr. did not say boo about it.  And when I was temping, my temp was always actually lower, even when I use the mattress pad.
  • The concern with electric blankets are with the electromagnetic field it creates. I guess there isn't enough evidence that it is safe for use.

If you are going to use one, I suggest a microwaveable bean bag. Moist heat is supposed to be better for you in general anyways.

  • My dr. said it was fine. Just take it off if I got too warm, as most people would anyways.
  • I have one and will use it to warm up the bed before I get in.  It is so hard to get warm in a bed in the winter (for me) without it.

Not sure I'd use it to sleep.  But as long as your body doesn't get over 100 I guess it'd be okay.  I think I'd treat an electric blanket like a bath.  Warm up with it, but don't "soak" in it for longer than 10-20 mins.

This is basically no evidence to support this and my doctor rolled his eyes when I asked him about a heating pad.

  • where i'm living right now, we don't have any heat at all.. we're moving in a couple of months, but the last few nights have been miserable even with a space heater and multiple blankets..  i'm thinking i'll have to get a heating blanket until we move.  i'll just make sure to keep it on a low setting.  i'm not sure if i'll use it in the new house or not, i want to stay safe.. and right now a heating blanket is more safe than hypothermia!

  • I've already used one!  I didn't even realize it was a problem when your pregnant until I started reading these posts!  I had it on a medium setting and slept with it for an hour and a half.  I woke up hot, but not ridiculously hot.  My dh told me that I would know if I was too hot (like at 102 degrees) since that is really hot and I would probably be overheated.  I'm trying not to worry about it.  But it's kind of hard!  Anyone have any affirmation that I'll be ok?  I'll be talking to my doctor on Monday.
