Babies: 3 - 6 Months

SAHMs in cold weather areas

What are you ladies doing with LO during the day now that it is getting cold out? We've been doing walks, going to the park or zoo....but now it is getting too cold to go out for an extended period of time and once the snow comes it will be a major pain to walk around a lot!

I need to get out of the house during the day for my sanity and so DH can sleep uninterrupted (he works night shift 3X a week). Today we walked the mall....but that is going to get old (and expensive!) quick! Mommy & me classes are crazy expensive in the city ($160 for 1 class a week/6weeks). Museums are crazy pricey too!

  • We go to storytime at our local library. They have a 0-24 month old storytime every Tuesday and Wednesday morning for a half hour. We tried Gymboree but it was way to expensive! This is free and my daughter loves it.

  • We joined a meet up group (www.meetup.com) and there are lots of scheduled meetups that are cheap or free. Also, I try to see my friends with babies a few times a month. Someone hosts and we just hang out with the babies.

I'm worried about the cold too bc I like to get out with LO too. I can stay in the house once or twice a week, but any more and I go stir crazy!

  • I see you live in Chicago, have you heard of Monkey bizness we are trying it this week. Its 5 dollars, I think. Also, you can get passes for the museums at the library so you can go for free. I don't have any other ideas besides the these and the mall.

ETA: I'm in the burbs of Chicago but belong to a meetup group in the city if you are interested pm me and I can give you details.

  • I usually go out to the store and get 1 thing I need. Which normally turns into more than one lol.. Also we walk around the local outlets ( I bundle her up and cover her with a thick blanket )

Usually though I stay at home, do dishes, laundy, clean.. always something to do lol

  • We need things to do too! We are in th nw burbs - Arlington heights. But we both grew up in crystal lake.
  • We do mommy and me meetings twice a week, swimming twice a week, go to a friends' house, go to the mall, and other than that we just hang out inside. It gets boring sometimes I know.

Why are your mommy and me classes expensive? Maybe you should look into different ones. There are some in town here that are an actual course thing, and then free ones just put on by our health clinic that are more like get togethers.

  • I found a drop in playgroup through a local maternity store that only charges $5 a week to attend. They have a huge room with tons of toys for the kiddos to play with.

I also go to the library for storytime 2xs a week. The one we go to is geared towards young infants-they sing songs, read a short story, then it's playtime with the toys out for 45 minutes. DS loves it.

  • I'm kind of in to staying out of the cold- lately I've been meeting up with my friends at coffeeshops and working on some crocheting or artwork and just hanging out... I've pretty much done that type of thing every winter since I could drive though. I suppose the day will come when W is like 'umm mom this is boring' but until then, he's stuck hanging out along with me.

  • Browse some local family websites for ideas. For example, in STL there's indoor (and free!) stuff at the zoo, free play areas at a train store, a resale shop, several mall playgrounds. And we joined our Childrens museum so we can go as often as we want (The Magic House). There are also open play sessions I plan to check out (for a small fee) at a community center and an early childhood education center. For rare treats, we have pricier options like a cool childrens aquarium. I'm sure Chicago has plenty once you meet some moms in the know. That's the hard part, though, right? :)
