Babies: 0 - 3 Months

On Zantac, Enfamil AR.. *still* massive spit up.. now what?!

I really dont know what to do with this kid. He spits up a LOT after he eats.. and it can last up to over an hour from his last bottle. He constantly has to wear a bib and we're going through about 10 bibs a day. Pedi said he is pretty classic reflux, so he's on Zantac. We also switched him to the Enfamil AR (its a thicker formula) hoping the thickness would help it stay down. I have started to introduce him to spoon-feeding with oatmeal cereal.. hoping THAT will stay down since its even thicker. I really dont know what the next step is.. Any advice?? (Besides call the pedi, because obviously we're going that route.. just wondering if there's any personal experience/advice)

  • Some babies just have immature digestive systems. I'm sure he'll grow out of it. Is he in pain when he spits up? Does he cry/arch his back/etc..? If not, there really isn't too much you can do. Just try feeding more frequently with smaller amounts, keeping him upright for at least 1/2 hour after feeding, and trying not to jostle him too much afterward. My ped said that spitting up is more of a laundry issue than a medical one if they are gaining weight and happy.

  • prilosec.  skip the zantac.  honestly.  ask about it and see what the doctor says.

DD has horrible reflux.  classic signs, but the doctor said it was severe.  Zantac did not work.  We can not switch to AR formula due to a protein allergy, she has on alimentum.  We just went to prilosec and it has made a world of difference.

  • Zantac didn't work for us either.  She's on prevacid now and still spits up but is better.  The AR formula didn't help the spitting and gave her horrible gas pains so we're not on that anymore either.

  • possible milk protein allergy?? my baby had the same issues. Shes on Nutramigen AA which is very expensive and not sold in stores, but it works! I had her off her reflux meds (Prevacid) in no time! The reflux was due to the allergy.
  • If LO is not showing signs of discomfort and the scale shows a steady weight gain, then just go with the flow (no pun intended). He'll grow out of it. If he is acting like he's in pain or not thriving, ask the doc about other med options. My pediatrician warned that when you introduce solid foods, spitting up will increase again for a little while. Something to keep in mind if you're starting cereal now.

My DD has reflux issues, but not bad enough to warrant a Rx (steady weight gain, but she was visibly uncomfortable with every very frequent spit up and silent reflux, and sometimes while eating..I EBF). My doc recommended Mylanta (1/4 tsp before each feeding) before going right to a Rx, and it's worked wonders! It doesn't decrease the reflux, but it keeps her super comfy and no more discomfort.
