OB/GYN Recommendation and PCOS

Hi,

I am new to The Bump and posting!. DH and I are starting to think about TTC and are just doing our homework. Wanted to see if any of you had recommendations for good OB/GYN's in the Boston area. I would like to see the doctor before TTC so they have my background, etc. I am thinking that we want to use someone affiliated with Brigham and Women's. I also have PCOS, so am interested in trying to find someone who specializes in fertility. Any help is appreciated!

Thanks!

Not sure how much help this is, but I feel bad that no one has answered you yet. I go to Dr. Karen Poley in Brighton, she is affiliated with St. Elizabeth's. I LOVE her (as much as you can love an OB-GYN) and I have been going to her for years and many of my friends now go to her too.

    Good luck!

I guess I'm not good at posting since I "blank replied" earlier!

I was diagnosed with PCOS when I was 15, and had a very hard time TTC. I sought out help at Vincent Gynecology at Mass General and they referred me to Vincent Fertility at Mass General. I can't say enough good things about the doctors and staff at MGH!! We had to go through IUI (inter-uterine insemination) - and while it wasn't romantic or really fun - we conceived on our third cycle (we had consented to start IVF the next month, so it was a PLEASANT SURPRISE!) and are expecting our first child July 1st, 2011!!!! :)

I know there are some preconceieved notions about MGH - it's hard to park, it's hard to get to, it's hard to get appointments, etc - but the fertility clinic is easy to get it, very well organized in terms of appointments, and in the Yawkey Outpatient Building, which has it's own parking garage so it's always easy to find a spot! I can't tell you how great our experience was!!!!

I would REALLY recommend looking into MGH - especially Dr. Irene Souter. She is knowledgeable, compassionate, and surrounded by a great team. I know with PCOS we are conditioned to think it will be hard to conceive naturally, and for me it was. One thing most doctors I spoke with wanted to know was how long we were TTC before we sought help. I've been told most insurances will not assist with fertility assistance until you have been diagnosed with primary infertility - ie, you have been trying for 12 months with no luck. It stinks, but you might want to TTC sooner rather than later in case that is the case with your insurance.

Good luck with whatever you do and where ever you end up. My journey was tough and I didn't have anyone to talk to during it that truly understood, so I sought out a social worker to talk to. Don't be ashamed to consider talking to someone while you are going through this process. It's really helpful. The journey is not easy, but it is soooo worth it.

Please let me know if I can help you in any other way!
