Poor thing, I guess she is still living with Gary but they didn't grant either parent custody and now she is a ward of the state.

This situation is so sad. That poor baby being around all that yelling and neglect.  Watching Amber makes me so angry and frustrated.

The child is in state legal custody but placed with the father, so though 'ward of the state' sounds awful, the child wouldn't understand one way or the other.  

At the temporary custody hearing the mother and father could seek direct temporary custody or put forward a relative with whom they would like the baby to live.  Regardless, it doesn't look like foster care in the true sense is in the cards so long as Gary's home continues to be suitable for placement and/or direct temporary custody.

I don't think the awful part is that she';s been declared Ward of the State- I think the bad part is how she came to be declared as such!

also, there's no stopping that stupid psycho from having more kids to lose custody of...piece of crap mom.

I guess I just see it from a different perspective.  Now that Leah is out of her mom's home, her care is improving and that is a wonderful thing.  I don't watch the show and know nothing about Gary or the maternal grandmother, but hopefully putting her into state custody was the first step in giving her a better life.  The sad part is that I don't get the impression that there is sufficient abuse/neglect to terminate her parental rights.  Chances are she will simply be told to take an anger management class, a parenting class, and then so long as nothing horrible happens during visits, custody will return to mother ... unless Gary fights for custody or she agrees to a guardianship with the maternal grandmother.
