Anyone do an unmedicated IUI cycle?

Our first cycle is going to be unmedicated to give my RE an opportunity to do more b/w, an HSG and monitor me without skipping the IUI completely this cycle.  Has anyone done this?  From what I've been reading, the success rates aren't very high, but I'm just excited to be doing something that might improve our chances as opposed to having to wait until the cycle after this next one.

Just wondering if anyone has done this and what their experience was like- really, the timing.  He said something about getting monitored from CD10 and possibly every other day?  Has anyone heard of anyone that was successful (roommate's boyfriend's sister stories welcome ;))?

Re: Anyone do an unmedicated IUI cycle?

  • I haven't done this but if we decide to try IUI's my RE said he'll have us try 3 unmedicated before we move on to clomid.

So it must work for some people :)

  • I did this 3 times with my OBGYN before moving on to an RE.  I had to go in for monitoring every other day before ovulation and once I got a color change on the OPK I went in for IUI.  It was a waste of time and $ for us but I know several people who have babies from unmedicated IUI's.  So, it CAN work.  Good luck!

  •  we did 2 unmedicated cycles and it was a complete waste.  honestly it does not give much more of an increase success rate than just having TI.  i would have rather saved my $$.
  • We did 3 unmedicated IUI's before moving on to Clomid. Obviously in our case not successful. My RE just had me use OPK's to know when I was ovulating. Good luck! Geeked
  • I did one unmedicated and then moved to clomid. Right now I am back to unmedicated while we decide what steps to take next.

We are using DS and have no chance of getting pregnant if we don't do any IUI but I just don't know what our next step is yet so we will just do unmedicated IUI's to at least give us some sort of chance.

I use OPKs to monitor for my surge and then go in the following day for IUI.

Seasoul on SAIF is a success story of an unmedicated IUI so you might try posting over there for more experiences of success stories.

  • We did 2 unmedicated IUIs, and both were not successful.

For the first round (in August) I went in for b/w and u/s often, starting on day 10, and pretty much every other day, through day 18.  I'm apparently a late ovulator, so that was a good thing that they learned.  The second time around, they didn't start b/w and u/s until day 14, since they knew I was a late bloomer!

As I said, we didn't have success with them, by we're faced with the possibility of MFI (although our diagnosis is unexplained IF, DH's counts are on the low end), which may be why...

    Good Luck!!

    I would use OPKs also.

Thanks for mentioning Seasoul, I'd forgotten that she did an unmedicated cycles!  Her first unmedicated IUI got her Cal!

  • Thank you ladies!!  I really appreciate your thoughts.  IUIs are covered by our insurance, so while there will be some OOP expenses for us, it will be manageable financially and we aren't wasting time bc we don't have the option of taking meds this cycle as per RE.  It's not like I'm choosing natural vs. meds, I'm choosing IUI or no IUI.

We have issues with low volume/low morph (though our RE was not concerned about the morp at all), so my hope is that it will be a little better than just TI because they are washing the sperm and getting it to where it needs to be.  Can't be worse right?

I will definitely reach out on SAIF.  Thanks again :)
