PT question: how long do they have to sit on potty?

Hi ladies

I'm going to try training my 2 1/2 yr old dd this thanksgiving break.  I'm taking the approach where the first day I put her on every 15 minutes, lots of fluids, etc (no flames, please).  How long should I have her sit on the potty each time??  I cannot remember what I did with my ds.   TIA

Re: PT question: how long do they have to sit on potty?

  • Not flaming, but you'll drive yourself bonkers with every 15 min potty breaks.

I  never made either of my two sit on the potty.  I'd ask if they had to go if I knew it had been an hour or more, but didn't press it.  They have to learn for themselves the feeling of "I gotta go!" It gives them some ownership in the task...otherwise you are just training yourself, right?

  • No flames, you'll just never get to do anything else.  I mean, if you set her on it every 15 for 5 minutes.... when the heck are YOU going to pee??

We let them sit as long as they're happy there.  They get cranky, off they go.  We don't want it to be a chore or a bad thing.

  • ugh, I actually meant to write every 25-30 minutes.  I'm not sure if that was a typo or my brain wasn;t working.  But I TOTALLY agree that it should be positive and that she should sit there as long (or as short) as she wants.  I trained my ds 2 years ago and I'm a little rusty.  Thanks for the advice!
