My Dad's name is John, but I really like the name Johnathon too. What are some opinions about spelling it with the "h" to still carry on the name??
Options right now for carrying on the name are:
John Matthew (mn after DH's name)
Johnathon Lee (family mn for multiple generations)
Re: Opinions - Jonathon vs. Johnathon
Go with Jonathan. He can still be called John if you want. My BIL is Jonathan NN John.
Jonathan Matthew sounds great.
The name is spelled JonathAn. If you must use an H, then JohnathAn (but don't do this). Don't end it with "on".
I would prefer John over Johnathan, but Jonathan is my favorite.
I love the name John. Why not just name your son John? Jonathan is a great name, too - but I don't care for the H in it, but that doesn't mean it's terrible to have an H, either. It's not like your naming him J'nythynn!

This. If you want to "carry on" the name John, then just use John. Or use Jonathan and use John as a nn. No one will ever spell Johnathon this way, so you and your little one will have to correct people the rest of his life.
Not to mention that you are setting up the kid for a life time of having to correct how people spell his name.
FWIW, i spelled my baby's name the most common way for this very reason, even though i liked another (acceptable) spelling better (think Catherine and Kathryn). Doesn't make a difference. I still have to spell it every time and peoplehave sent her gifts with her name spelled all kinds of ways (one which i even like better than either the way i spelled it or my other fave).
also, baby name books are descrptive, not prescriptive. thy get "60000" names by including every fool variation the can think of. Yes, someone named their child johnathon. someone also named their child jyhn'ithynne. doesn't mean you should.

I prefer Jonathan (Jon) over John, but I like both.
Johnathon is just *ick* to me... especially with the "O" instead of an "A".
This. I've only seen it spelled Jonathan. I really like the name!
For some reason I keep thinking "John-a-thon!" Like it's a fundraiser or something.
"Jonathan" is just fine.
Exactly! Like a telathon...
I agree, just stick with Jonathan.
