IHO the budget post below:
So I keep reading these things for Dinner for under $10 and think, really do people spend $10 on every dinner? Granted, my kids are not big eaters, but we have several dinners that are $5.00 for 4 people.
What are your favorites that are inexpensive?
Our favorite is Mexican Pizza:
Refried Beans $1.25
Tortillas $1.00 ($2.50 for 10)
Cheese $1.50 (6 oz, usually $2.00 for 8 oz)
Onion, other veggie, or small amount of meat $1.25
Re: What is your favorite $5.00 meal?
I'd say a meal around here is rarely over $5....but most often it is just the kids and I (so I prepare about 3 adult-size servings).
Breakfasts (usually for dinner) ....pancakes/eggs/bacon or biscuits/gravy/eggs
Tacos
pasta/sauce/frozen veggie.
those are my go-to's ....pasta is my fave.
drumsticks are my new favorite cheap meal. Not the ice cream either We skin them sometimes to make them healthier too!
I keep finding different yummy recipes for them too so it's not the same thing over and over. Last time the package (about 6 or so) was less than $2. Add a salad and some potatoes and it's less than $5.
I just made tuna pasta w/pesto tonight. ?1 can tuna, most of a box of wheat spag noodles, 1/4 c pesto, ?about 2T butter & some parmesan on top.
The pesto was on sale 3 for 5, the noodles were about 2.. ?
?
I honestly cannot think of a single dinner that we eat that I can make for under $5. I would estimate most of our dinners in the $10-$15 range.
The last two meals I've made:
Roast chicken ($8), macaroni & cheese for the kids ($2), roasted carrots (maybe $3 worth of carrots?) for a total of $15 not including milk to drink or the fruit they had for dessert.
Grilled salmon ($15) and broccoli (maybe $3?) for a total of $18, not including the condiments/seasoings for the salmon or the kids' milk and fruit.
