Baby Names

Hollis

I know the general board consensus on masculine names for females but I heard this one yesterday and wanted to know what you all thought of this for a little girl.

Here's what Behind The Name says about it. I was surprised that it listed a feminine reference for this.

TIA

Re: Hollis

  • Reminds me of the character from Big Love Hollis Green. He isn't a very good guy so, I personally wouldn't use that name. But if I was to use it it would be for a boy not a girl. For a girl I would use Holly if I wanted something along those lines.

  • I also thought of Hollis Green right off of the bat.  And even if I hadn't, I am not sure I could agree with this as a girls name.

  • I think it's fine for a girl, but as with any surname-as-first-name, I only condone it if it's a family name.
  • I really like Hollis for a girl. I think it has a quiet, haunting beauty. It's a unique name, and I really don't get a masculine vibe from it at all (unisex or no).

That's kind of what I was thinking.

By no means is this our choice but I just wanted to hear some opinions. I've never seen Big Love so I wasn't aware of that reference; it's something to consider due the popularity of that show.

    Thanks ladies.

  • I've only heard of it as a LN.  I'd prefer Holly for a girl

  • I'd assume it was a boy if I just saw or heard the name, but I think it works fine as a girl name too.  It doesn't sound overly masculine to me.

  • I was worried Holly might be to plain and looked into other Holl- names. I thought about Hollis but truth be told I love feminine names and this one wasn't cutting it. I also looked (ok, came across) Hollyn, but it seemed like either haulin' or sounded like someone forgot the D at  the end of Holland. So although I don't hate Hollis, it is not feminine enough for my taste and we're sticking to Holly.

  • I used to know a girl called Hollis.
  • I've only ever known one Hollis and it was a guy. I never even thought about it for a girl until now. It could work but it wouldn't be my first pick.

  • I actually think it's rather cute. However, it feels a bit unfinished, like I should add the -ter to it (Hollister?!)

    That or Holly.

  • I have a friend whose last name is Hollis, so for that reason it's nms.

  • I kinda like Hollis... I've also never seen Big Love, and wouldn't base my choice on that.

  • NMS but I do know a grown woman (probably in her 60's ) named Hollis.  I also know a woman in her 30's named Willis ( it is a family name tradition).

  • My first thought is the Run DMC lyric "It's Christmas time in Hollis Queens, Mom's cooking chicken and collard greens."

Aside from that bit of randomness, this name has Southern Boy written all over it for me.

  • My DD is Hollis, a family name.

Some people love it and some people hate it.

We call her Hollis Ann a lot and have met another little girl named Hollis Ann- also a family name for them.
