Mom's of two or more......

Did you buy another crib for the second baby or did you give the first child's crib to the new baby?

DS who is 26 months is not interested in a big boy bed at all. We have tried but he consistently tells us he wants his bed (the crib). His crib is one of the 4 in 1 convertable ones. The baby is due in 3 months and I'm trying to come up with a game plan. Target has a pretty great deal on a crib right now for the holiday and I'm wondering if I should just bite the bullet and get the baby another crib and convert DS crib to a big boy bed when he tells us he's ready or should I hold out and hope DS will warm up to the big bed?

Re: Mom's of two or more......

  • I only have 1 and am not pg, but our plan for when we have #2 is to get them their own crib.  O has a convertible crib and we are going to make that a toddler bed and then his big bed.
  • We used the same one.  We converted the crib to a toddler bed about 4 months before baby was due. DD was not wanting to give up the crib either, until we told her that converting it is just basically taking one of the sides off. She was ok with that, and then got excited because it was her bed still, but now "new".  After 4 months in it we moved her to her own room and a big girl bed - a queen size that we already had.  She was ok with the move then as she was getting big for the toddler bed. She sleeps sideways and always slept with her legs hanging off the size of the bed anyways.  I think the novelty of her getting her own big girl room and letting her pick out the paint, decor etc was enough to convince her.  She was 30 months when the baby was born.  The baby slept in our room for the first 3 months too so that gave us a little cushion of time to make sure she adjusted ok to her new room and bed.

  • Ours are 22 mos apart and we bought a second crib.  DD1 was fine in her crib and we just didn't feel like she was ready to transition.  It worked fine for us.  We bought the same crib (but in a different finish) and they both convert to toddler and then full bed beds.

  • Ideally we will give new baby Keira's crib, but since she just started SSTN a few months ago, we are not going to evict her until she is ready. If that means buying a second crib we'll do it for the sanity! I will not buy the 2nd crib until the 11th hour though--as in baby will be here and be ready for the transition from our room to the crib when we order one!

  • I'm in the same boat, 5 months pregnant with a 21 month old toddler.  After heated discussion with the DH, we are attempting a switch to a "big boy" room with a toddler bed and toddler furniture.  We're going to start right after Christmas and will make it a slow transition.  We're having another boy, and it didn't make sense to me to have two boy nurseries.

So baby #2 is getting a hand-me-down nursery!  Guess he better get accustomed to his brother's used stuff.

Also, if the new bed/room is a disaster after a few weeks, we may change our plans.  We're buying a used toddler bed from a family friend, so aren't investing too much $$$ in the process.

  • We gave the crib to DD#2 even though it converts to a toddler and full bed.  We got DD#1 a twin bed and transitioned her at 17 mo. (1 mo. before DD#2 was born).  Although there was a transitional period where she didn't always stay in bed at first, overall the transition wasn't that bad.  DD#1 loves her big girl bed.  If we have a 3rd, I would do the same thing vs. buying another crib.
