Help for constipation...

Constipation remedies?? I've been taking a stool softener at night, but I have not had relief and I'm getting quite backed up. Help?

Re: Help for constipation...

  • How long have you been taking them?  I had to take them for 5 days before it kicked in, so now I take them daily. But in the meantime, broccoli, apple juice both helped a little. GL to you!

  • Preface: Please always consult your OB before taking any medications.

That being said: Miralax. Everyday until the problem subsides. I was lectured sternly by both my OB and the ER doctor (who had the delightful job of giving me two enimas for an impacted bowel in week 15) to stay on top of the poop problem.

Take Colace as well, so that once things get moving, they move easier.

In addition - prune juice. It's gross, I hear you, but it works. Eat, if you can, dried prunes, dried cranberries, apricots, etc. LOTS of water. I drink a smoothie of blueberries, strawberries, peaches, POM juice every morning, which also helps.

Stay away from apples and bananas (I know, I had no idea, I thought apples helped), excessive dairy and fatty foods. As your system regulates, you can slowly introduce some of these back in, but be careful.

I'm sorry, and I hope this subsides for you. It's so miserable.

I didn't know that about Apples! Sorry for the bad advice OP! It sure is miserable.

  • I'm on the same boat! I have been thinking about trying colace. The worst part is I have gas cramping really bad, for that gas-x works. Prunes help a little. And today I was craving buffalo wings (never liked them before preg) and I don't know if it was that, but without saying too much, it felt like it cleaned out everything I had, ha ha ha.
  • With DS#1 I had to drink prune juice with a little bit of OJ mixed in almost every day. I've heard that watermelon works wonders. Eat yogurt with live cultures to regulate you. Prior to pregnancy I would drink some warm water and sometimes that got it going..

Apple juice is, oddly, okay. I think it's the over-dose of fiber in apples themselves. When you are already stopped up, fiber actually becomes an issue.

Again, makes no sense to me either. I'm just repeating what is on my ER discharge papers. :)

  • Embarrassed not to hijack the thread, but is constipation always painful? I just realized I haven't gone #2 in four days, but don't feel anything is wrong. I've never been constipated before and have no idea. I guess I might need to look into some of these remedies if i keeps up like this.

  • Thanks for the advice, Ladies! I ate some yogurt before bed and trying some of the other more 'natural' remedies. If I don't go today I'm going to call the dr. about miralax. I need to prepare for Thanksgiving eating, and I can't do that if I'm backed up!!
