Multiples

Natural delivery?

I'm curious....did anyone have a natural delivery?  I've always thought it was something I wanted to try but as soon as I discovered multiples I tossed the idea out the window.  I'm 35 weeks along and consummed with what labor and delivery will be like and suddenly I'm wondering "can this be done naturally?"

Thanks!

Re: Natural delivery?

  • There are a few ladies here that went natural. I'm still planning on it myself..against others opinions...our ob says I should have an epi onhand and I let him order one but I told him when it comes right down to it I won't use it unless I think I "need" one or have to have a c/section.

    Goodluck in whatever you decide!

  • have you talked to your OB about this?  Some will not let you go vaginal without an epidural in place (turned on very low) in case you need a last minute emergency c/s.  I can't imagine your OB hasn't discussed this with you already?

all i can say is that i loved my epidural with DS1... it stopped working for a short period of time and the pain was INSANE.  Thankfully that only lasted about 1/2 hour.

I loved my c/s even more... easier to recover from than my vaginal delivery - LOVED it.

  •  I had a med-free vaginal birth with my twins.  It was an amazing experience. They were born at 36wks 4 day.  No NICU time.

    Best of luck!

  • What do you mean by natural?  Natural connotation on the bump is for med free.  Vaginal vs. c-section is the mode of delivery; natural does not equal vaginal in the world of obstetrics.

If you mean med free, it can happen but is rare.

If you mean vaginal delivery, it's not that rare and easily doable if baby A is cephalic.

As a provider who delivers twins vaginally my preference is for an epidural because many of us breech extract twin B and it is usually too uncomfortable without an epidural.

    Good luck.

This is how my twins were delivered--both babies were head down when my induction started. However, after I pushed A out, the OB did an ultrasound and discovered B had flipped to breech, so he did a breech extraction. I had originally hoped to go med-free but since I had an induction, it ended up being extremely intense so I got an epidural about 7 hrs in (2 hrs before the pushing stage started). I was very thankful for that since I did end up needing the breech extraction after all.

  • I've done vaginal breech extraction of twin B on an umedicated patient.  Holy blood curdling screams.  It's already a very stressful situation for everyone.  Then to have no anesthesia for that...ugh...god bless the epidural is all I can say.  For the safety of the patient, baby, and doctor (who can get kicked by mom) we make all of our twin moms get an epidural.

  • Yeah, my OB told me he'd had to do them unmedicated and that they are not pleasant. ;) I do remember one MoM on a message board saying she had it done unmedicated and that it was horrible but only lasted a minute so she was OK with it, but ... yikes. E&RMommy, I'm curious; are you OK with a MoM waiting till she's 8 cm or so before getting the epi placed? That was what a MoM in my MOTC (an RN and LC) had recommended to me when I was working on my birth plan.

  • Typically you want it placed earlier esp. if the patient has had other vaginal deliveries.  Patients can go complete on you very quickly if they'd had other children.  I suppose it would be ok at 8 cm but certainly not preferable.  I know my own MFM would have made me get it earlier (when we were planning vaginal delivery).

  • Got it. As it turned out in my case, I was begging for it within 20 minutes of getting the amniotomy (at 5cm). ;) I didn't get it for another two hours after that--longest two hours of my life!

  • I'm hoping for a med-free vaginal delivery too, and I guess time will tell.

With my DS, I had a wonderful med-free birth -- with a doula and some relaxation techniques, it was really a piece of cake. But I also had him in a birth center with a supportive midwife, so I'm wondering how things will go this time in a hospital setting with an OB who I may need to argue with. She and my MFM both seem of the opinion that vaginal births are inherently dangerous for twins. In most cases, I don't believe that, although I certainly wouldn't take risks with the babies' health if there were any actual distress or complications. It's just hard to hear their negativity and figure out what's their opinion and what's based specifically on my babies.
