Re: Rec your private health insurance...

  • I have had both Anthem BCBS, and Humana.  Anthem was WAY better in terms of being granted physical therapy, so I would choose them.  I'm a state employee, so my monthly premiums were so cheap - $40/family.

  • We have an individual insurance plan through Golden Rule which is a division of United. We got it through Professional Photographers of America since I am a member for my photography business. Anyone can get it though. It's not bad for some things, bad for others, but our co-pay is $35 and we have a deductible of $2500 pp. We don't have maternity coverage because it's cheaper for us to prepay with the hospital than go thru the ins. company's policy which is to continue to pay all that extra money until we are ready to get pregnant, what a waste of money since we planned to have a 4 year gap between kids. I also have a rider for a pre existing condition - which is annoying, since they don't cover my doctor appts and any related hospital visits, but they do cover associated prescriptions. Our premium for the 3 of us is now about $750 per month, slowly on the rise each year. :(

I have NHP through my employer, but it's about $700/month for families. I have DH and DD on Golden Rule as well, (the family plan) and with a $5000 deductible and $35 co-pays, our premium is $235 month...to add DS, it will go to $363/month. I can't believe you are apying $750!!

  • I also have NHP so I can't help you much more...it is pricy for families but so are most other insurance carriers. :( Sounds like the Golden Rule family plan isn't as bad as some other plans!

  • We have Aetna, but I have it through my employer and dh & Abraham are on their own private plan. It ended up coming out a LOT cheaper that way. We're looking to change companies though (for them) because it's gotten way more expensive and their plan is ridiculous and doesn't seem to cover much at all. So we're looking at BCBS, but I'm not sure what plan yet:/.

  • Having an individual plan as a self-employed family is not ideal but it's what we're doing! it is the price to pay to live a flexible life and make the hours we want. Everyone thinks being self employed is living it up, but there are SO MANY more associated costs (mostly health related, with my family considering how much Zachary has been sick since starting school) that sometimes when things get hard I wish I just worked for the man like everyone else (like the last time we had to take Zachary to the hospital for an antibiotic shot/bloodwork/Xray when he was sick.. that ER visit cost us $600). Golden Rule is definitely not the best situation but I have heard of others being SO much worse, plus there is a chance we would never even get approved for another insurance company if we wanted to switch due to my pre existing condition. It's a challenge.
