Wow! What a week we've had! I don't post on here too often, but I'm going to share our story. This past Monday I woke up just feeling like crap. I couldn't pinpoint exactly what was wrong, I just had a general "not feeling well today" feeling. As the day progressed I felt more and more yucky and my back started to hurt quite a bit. Tuesday morning I had my routine doctor appointment scheduled, so I decided if I kept feeling this way I would mention it to her when I went in. At about 4pm my back started to have pretty intense pains that felt like muscle spasms. This didn't alarm me a whole lot because I've had back pain since about mid-2nd trimester, but it had improved greatly in the last 2 weeks. Also, it was a particularly hard day at work so I just decided I must have overdone it. When I got home from work I laid with the heating pad and it seemed to help a little. I started to have a strange- consistency mucus-y discharge with a little bit of brownish blood in it. I added that to the small list of things to mention to my Dr in the morning. I didn't get much sleep that night, the "muscle spasms" kept me awake. In the early morning some of these spasms were accompanied by what I thought were BH. I showered and got ready early Tuesday, because I thought a nice warm shower would soothe my aching back. And instead if waiting until 9 for my appointment I decided to go right at 8 when the clinic opens and try to be seen early. I had some bright red spotting along with my "different than normal CM and I was starting to get alarmed. I cried when my DH left for work, I didn't want him to be far away from me that day. When I arrive at the doctor's office they got me right in. My blood pressure was super high because I was pretty nervous by this time. I told the nurse what had been going on and she immediately called the doctor to examine me. She did a pelvic exam and said I was dilated to 3cm. She admitted me to the hospital and told me I would be transferred out to the nearest hospital with a NICU, about an hour away, just in case. I was given a steroid injection to speed the baby's lung development in case they were unable to stop labor and I ended up delivering. I was on the ambulance being transferred out by my scheduled appointment time, 9:15. DH came immediately when I texted him from the dr's office saying I was I early stages of labor. I hadn't told him much about my symptoms, just that I wasn't feeling right and he had assumed the dinner he had made Monday night had been to blame. I just hadn't wanted to be a drama queen so I didn't complain much about it.
I arrived at the second hospital at about 11:00, and I was given Procardia to help to stop the contractions. They continued through the day despite the Procardia, but it did slow them down. At about 5pm my water broke. At this time a definite plan was finally made: they would continue to try to postpone labor until Thursday morning, which would be 24 hours after the second injection of the lung-developing steroid. Ideally this is injected twice, the second injection 24 hours after the first, and for delivery to be 12-24 hours after the second injection (or more) gives the baby a better chance at healthy lungs. On Thursday morning they would stop giving the Procardia and let nature take its course. If I didn't go back into labor by the following Monday they would induce me at that time. My contractions finally completely stopped late Wednesday morning but started again at 9:00 Wednesday night. The Procardia did nothing to stop them or slow them down at this time. Things started moving very quickly. My contractions were every 6-10 minutes from this time until my baby's birth.
Patrick Daniel was born at 6:46 am Thursday morning, at 33 weeks, 3 days. He was crying immediately when he came out, yay for healthy lungs! And he is pretty big, too. 5 lb 13 oz, 19 inches long. He seems very healthy and the NICU doctors only expect to have to keep him for a week or 2. He is our perfect little boy and we couldn't be happier.
But my advice to anyone is to call immediately if you ever have any questions or concerns about your pregnancy. If I had things wouldn't have changed much for my family, but waiting until the next day because I didn't want to make a big deal out of nothing proved pretty stupid. Any symptom can be something! I was sure it was nothing because "how could these possibly be labor symptoms? It's way too early!" I don't think the possibility of my being in labor even occurred to me until my DH was leaving for work that morning.
Sorry about the super- long post! Here is a picture of our little one. ( I hope it works!)
