help decode this cry

We are on night 7 of very little sleep. Before this, DS was just waking once a night to eat. Now he is waking every 2-3 hours and just wimpers and whines. He's not hungry and his cry doesn't sound like anything is majorly wrong, just like he's more annoyed with something. I still just feed them both once during the night and he usually gets settled with a pacifier after a little while, but is just not sleeping well. This morning he woke at 5:30am and since I was supposed to get up at 6am anyways, I let him wimper for awhile to see if he would put himself to sleep eventually and by 6am he finally did. Any ideas what his problem could be?

Might be the 'four month wakeful' period a bit early. Though, ours were both still up to eat every three hours at that age.
