Congested baby

My LO makes the most awful sounds when he breathes sometimes.  Gurgly, snotty sounds.  Sometimes it even sounds like he's snoring! When we took him to the doctor yesterday, he said it was just some nasal congestion, but that all else looks good.

Despite the clean bill of health from the doc, the sounds kind of freak me out as a first time mom.  Are there some ways that you know of to help clear out his sinuses?

I swear by the nosefrida.  Also, we use a humidifier and keep her crib mattress on a 20 degree angle using a pillow underneath.

There is, but you're not going to like it!    You can suck them out but LO will most likely scream while you're doing it.  My LO has a cold and it's been awful!  But I've had to do it.  It works for getting some snot out but it sucks to have to do that to them.  You can also use saline drops up the nose to break up congestion if it's really bad, an awful experience as well since you are literally shoving water up LO's nose but you will really get a lot out.  I use these things only when it's really bad.  Mostly I just run a humidfier.

You can also take your baby into the bathroom with you and run the shower with the door shut so that the steam can break up some of the congestion.

It's normal. Their nasal passages are small and immature, still and also spit up can go up to their nose (don't be surprised if it comes out the nsoe) making them sound snotty.

I use the nose sucker and always get a ton out when she's congested. Also you may want to try a couple drops of saline in his nostrils. Just lay him on your lap and tilt his head back, then drip a little in each side. This helped my DD a lot! (If you do this, do it before feeding instead of after. Sometimes it makes them gag)

Also I agree with PP about not laying him flat on his back so the mucus won't drip down his throat so bad.

Thank you! I'm going to see if the local BRU has them in stock!  Hopefully the do!

I forgot to mention the saline!  You don't have to use saline with the nosefrida but you can use it.  I usually first suck what I can without the saline then I put the saline in and suck even more out.

I can see how helpful this is, but I think I would puke using that thing. The whole concept is just too weird for me, lol.
