TTC after 35

New to the Board

Hi,

I am new to the board. I just turned 40 in October and trying to conceive after a miscarriage in May. It's very frustrating because I waited so long to try and have a baby, and now that I REALLY want one I can't. We saw an RE early this month that will be running a few test once AF shows up later this week. We're excited but I'm a bit worried about the financial aspect of fertility treatments. Our insurance only covers up to $20,000 for the lifetime max, but hopefully we can conceive right away (wishful thinking).   Does anyone know on average the cost for treatments, medications, etc.?

Re: New to the Board

  • Welcome.  I can't answer your question on costs as we are waiting until the new year to start that process, but I wanted to wish you boatloads of luck that you get your BFP right away. :)

  • I also waited long and it is starting to get frustrating.  I think generally IUI cycle is $2000 and IVF is more like $18,000.  It will be interesting to see the numbers from across the country.  We've done 2 IUIs so far with no luck but we'll only be able to do one IVF if any and I can't bear that kind of pressure!
About me: A pixie in the city, 41, TTC #1 since May 2010, married 18 years. Diagnosed with, surgically removed, endometrioma Aug.2010 Sept 2010 IUI #1=BFN, Oct=cyst/bfn, Nov 2010 IUI #2 = bfn. Had to postpone IUI #3 b/c of a cyst natural=BFN. Skipped IUI #3, decided to go for IVF. Found/removed uterine polyps Jan 2011. IVF cancelled, no follicles. IVF #2: 3 great embies put in on Easter Sunday = BFN. Hoping for another chance at IVF in July. TTC is NOT for wimps. http://www.fertilityfriend.com/ticker/2fab90/ttc.png
  • That is great insurance. you should be able to do 3 iui's and IVF with that. I only pay 20% on treatments up to max 15,000 lifetime. I think IVF varies around the country. avg. is 11,000. I think. my iui's are alot cheaper then 2000.
  • Welcome! At my center an IUI cycle with injectables runs about $3000 including all monitoring (multiple bloodwork/ultrasounds), 2 inseminations and sperm washing - so basically that's about as costly as it gets. They told me that an IVF cycle runs around $15000.  These costs don't include the medications. This is for a clinic close to NYC that is fairly well-known, so the costs are probably higher than you'd find most places. I'm sort of in the same boat, my insurance covers up to $25,000 so I'm hoping I get pregnant before I have to go out of pocket.

    Good luck!

  • Thanks for the well wishes!!! I pray that you get your BFP as well!
  • I have some pretty good news for you.  My RE told me that there is a law in the state of Illinois requiring that insurer cover infertility treatments.  I live in Illinois, thought fantastic!!  Except I work for the government, and they are not required to follow laws in the state of Illinois (make their own rules).  Anyway, my RE says that for most people most things are covered.  Check you insurance plan.  We are going to be forced into a HMO, as those are the only types of federal plans that cover IVF.  Glad we got to the RE during open season, so that we can make the adjustments and financially prepare for what lies ahead.  Found abbreviations quite confusing....but the further I get in this process-the more I understand.  Good luck to everyone on the journeys!!!
