Going for my first consult with an RE next week, but I just had my annual with my obgyn. Being impatient as I am, I asked if she thought the RE could start the IUI on my next cycle and whether I would need an HSG first. She said she didn't know what he would want to do for sure, but since no problems have arisen with me with any test done so far (the main issue at the moment seems to be MH's volume/morph), she's not sure the RE would require it.
I thought it might be something they do routinely before doing an IUI cycle and was wondering if anyone with just MFI had not gotten an HSG?
Re: MFI/IUI- Anyone NOT get an HSG?
I had to do it before we could talk about what treatment we would do.
We actually found out DH had no sp.erm about an hour before my HSG and still had to do it. Although, that did distract from the procedure....
My first RE didn't have me do an HSG, but I had a SGH(?), the one where they check the uterus, he thought he some something, but turned out it was nothing. I did 3 IUIs and had a m/c, did 2 more and nothing. My new RE had me do one just becasue I hadn't and my tubes were clear. My insurance paid for it too.
They don't know till they check.
TTC since 2007

IVF #2 Aug 2011 is a BFN:<
IVF #3 March 2012 is a BFN
Not sure what to do now. Sad and lost.
This. I don't think they can MAKE you get an HSG, but most probably recommend it just so you're not starting a treatment that has no chance of working. In fact, when my RE was prepping me for mine, he said, "Ready?" I said, "I guess I have to be." He said, "Well, you don't HAVE to have this done, but we're here now!" While IUI is a lot cheaper than IVF, it's still usually a couple of hundred dollars every month, even with some coverage so I would say get the HSG done just to be sure you're proceeding with a treatment that has a chance of working. GL!

I doubt they will do a round of IUI without doing the HSG first. If I were you I would want it for my own piece of mind. Why spend the money on ART if its not giong to work? Or what if there is an issue with a tube and you end up with an ectopic pregnancy? Or what if there is a problem with the uterus and you have problems with implantaiton or even m/C? Just playing devils advocate but I would want one. ON top of that, most IVF clinics worry about their success rates so I doubt msot would do an IUI without knowing what their dealing with.
I have read that 20% of the time IF is related to both the woman and the man. My RE requested a whole series of tests. S/he will certainly wnat day 2or3 blood work to check your FSH and E2 and will likely want an U/S at teh same time to do a follicle count. I hated getting all of the tests but was able to do them all in one cycle so that was a good thing. Keep in mind, they will require your husband to have blood work before an IUI as well. Its to make sure he doens't have HIV or other infectious diseases before they put his sperm in you and risk infecting you (I'm pretty sure its a law that they MUST do that). I wouldn't be surprised if they also ordered a second SA for YH.
I know you are probably anxious to get going but try to have some patience. IF is so complicated and you want to have as many answers as possible before you come up with your game plan to make sure that your game plan is as successful as possible and your stay on the IF board is as short as possible. Here's hoping for your BFP very soon!
History of IF and 2.5 years TTC. The day we were to start our first IUI we received a call that changed our lives forever and 10 month old Olivia joined our family. Shortly thereafter we got a surprise BFP and baby 2 is due July 5, 2012
I would definitely do the HSG exam if you are looking at doing IUIs. I also think it is good to run the tests in case you have some IF issue as well.
Good luck!
All really good questions
As for the rest- sorry, my fault I really wasn't clear. I've already had b/w done 3 times, several physical exams and an U/S. MH has had 2 SAs done, plus he has seen a urologist twice for physical exams and a prostate scan. I am not sure if he had the STD checks (she just did mine today), but my obgyn did mention that NY has different laws regarding married couples vs. donor sperm on that issue, so I guess we'll see when we talk to the RE next week. Thanks again
This. My HSG was super easy and I did my first IUI that same cycle. Not that I looked forward to the procedure, but I was hoping they would require an HSG so that when we moved on with treatments, I had some piece of mind.
Good luck!
