Preemies

Rice cereal

My 32 week preemies are 5 monthes old today and on strike against bottles/formula. I was planning on waiting til they were 6 monthes/4 adjusted to start cereal but I am wondering if this is a sign they are ready for more?  When did everyone else start cereal? Not sure if a 3month adjusted age is too early?

Re: Rice cereal

  • our Pedi Dr stated that we could start her on cereal when she was 5 mos 3 1/2 adjusted. She is now 7 months and LOVES cereal (but not the rice kind lol). So just ask your Dr

  • My 31 weeker is 4 months and after his well visit the dr. told me I could start cereal.  I thought they would tell me to wait longer since he is only 2 months adjusted.  We have been doing it once a day since Sat and he takes only a very small amount but he seems to be having fun with it.  Give it a shot!
  • I have 33 weekers and got the ok to try rice cereal at their 4 month appt.  Like the pp, I was expecting to be told to wait until at least 4 months adjusted.  I was told that as long as the bulk of their calories are coming from BF/formula and there's no a drop in how much they take, cereal is fine to try.  I give them maybe a Tbsp each.  Some days they do great with it, others... notsomuch.

  • DD was 5 months/3 adjusted when we started cereal.  We did 1 tsp a day until we knew she could handle it, then slowly increased by 1 tsp.  Our pedi told us that if she could support her head and turn it on her own to signal she is full, she was ready.
