Trying to Get Pregnant

Frustrating visit with OB/GYN -- WWYD

I had my annual today with a new Dr. and added in a preconception check.  I told her DH and I had been trying since 1/2010 but not using charting or OPK's until recently (mid-cycle).  I also told her I have only had 4 periods this year.  She told me that IF is defined as someone who charts for 1 full year.  Then she said I was most likely annovulatory but no RE would take me seriously until I had 12 months worth of charts to prove it.  So she basically told me the last 11 months don't matter??  After I expressed my concern about waiting another full year she agreed to meet me again in March as long as I brought her charts.  I guess I'm happy to have something to look forward to but March seems like a long ways away.

On the positive side, it seems like she has my best interest in mind since she didn't just throw a bottle of Clomid at me and send me on my way.  But I'm still a little dissapointed at how she disregarded my long cycles over the past year as not relevant to determine whether or not I need additional assessment.  What would you do?  Deal with it or seek another opinion?

Re: Frustrating visit with OB/GYN -- WWYD

  • Are you set with staying with this OB/GYN?   I just met with mine for ovualtion help and my DH got an SA and we've only been actively trying since June. She didn't seem concerned or even ask for charts.

  • If you are open to it, I would probably start looking around for a new doctor.  That seems a little ridiculous.  I know all docs are different, but that sounds extreme.  Good to be cautious with the meds, but why make you wait another year when you could solve it with something simple, if you were just properly assessed?

I've been checking out your doggy pic in other posts.  LOVE it!!

No, I'm not set on her.  I'm fairly new to the area and was referred by my SIL.  I definitely don't want to get stuck with someone I never see eye to eye with.

  • I just saw a new GYN this month and I told him my cycles were getting longer and heavier and he said I could be anovulatory. He then told me if I wasn't PG in 4 months that he wanted me to follow up for testing. I was shocked at how soon because we just started in August of this year.
  • If it were me, I'd find another doctor. My doctor has never mentioned charting at all, and ordered b/w for me my 2nd month off the pill to be checked out. I think March is just prolonging something you could be treated for now!

  • If you feel like she didn't listen to your concerns or think they were valid enough to warrant follow-up when it is deserved, then you should find a new doctor.  You should find someone who really takes the time to listen to you.  Not someone who tells you that because you weren't charting all those months didn't count.

  • I'd suggest checking into a new OB since you two don't see eye to eye on this.  I agree that it's a bit rediculous that they REQUIRE 1 year worth of charts.  I told me OB that I chart and didn't tell me to stop, but suggested that I start using OPKs.  All doctors are different, but what's down the road if you disagree this early on?

  • I would start looking into finding someone else. I think it is a little ridiculous that she defines IF as a full year of charting - there are plenty (maybe most) of couples out there not charting. This kind of disagreement at the beginning of the process doesn't really bode well for the future, IMO. GL with whatever you decide!

  • I usually just "lurk" on this board, and don't post much at all... BUT... we've been TTC since February, and I too have irregular periods (due to severe endometriosis), and my doctor is handling our situation much differently!  All doctors are different for sure, and it's important to work with one who you can see eye to eye with!

In Sept he sent my husband for SA.  Then in Oct he performed a Tubal Patency test to make sure my tubes weren't blocked.  Now he has prescribed the lowest dosage of Clomid.  Also, I don't chart CM or anything, but I do keep track of symptoms and things on an iPhone App, and my doctor didn't ask to see it.  He just made notes of the dates I gave him in my chart, and analyzed based on that.

It's great she's not just throwing meds at you for sure!  But, if you're still concerned, it wouldn't hurt to get a second opinion.

  • Honestly I would probably find a new OB/GYN.

I understand how you feel with an OB/GYN that will not listen to you. I told my previous OB/GYN that my husband and I were trying to conceive and she said 'oh thats nice.' Then wrote me a prescription for BCP for 12 months!!! Needless to say I changed Dr.'s and now have an AWESOME one!

She also told me not to waste money on OPKs because charting would tell me everything I need to know.  I'm glad she is pro-charting but seriously?

Also PP about endometriosis...this is what I'm afraid of...cysts, endometriosis, etc.  It baffles me that these potential issues were never even considered by her.

    This.

I think it's extremely important that you and your Dr. agree on basic things. I think it's great that she is pro charting, but the fact that you've only had 4 periods this year kind of speaks for itself.

Personally, I'd find a Dr. I was more comfortable with.

I'm 25.  Maybe that's the reason?  Maybe if I was 35 she would have taken me more seriously?
