Talk to me about word initials ie; SAW, CAT

What are your thoughts on initials that make a word?

My newest favorite girl name is Sutton Eliza and our last name starts with W... so her initials would be SEW. I wouldn't normally give it a second glance, but I love to sew and think it's a little cheesy. your thoughts?

  • sew wouldn't bother me at all-  other words would  (ass, eww, etc)

  • My initials are now END. So I don't mind them spelling things out and SEW isn't bad.  Now if it were A.S.S., GOD (DH's orginial request for boys name George Oliver D***), APE, etc. Well then I wouldn't do it, but SEW definitely isn't bad.

DH tells me I'm his END.  His END of looking for the right woman, etc. lol.

  • As long as it's not a word like ASS or BUM or something, I don't think it's a big deal.  Plus I tend to think of initials as how they look as a monogram (first last middle).  Betsy's initials are EEG which is kind of silly but her monogram, EGE, is really pretty.
  • That wouldn't bother me. I am contemplating if IED is too much for me haha.  I think I am okay with it though.

  • SEW doesn't bother me and my initials were DAM. Nobody every noticed.

  • if our baby is a girl, her initials will be R.A.N. and i'm totally okay with it!

  • I read an article not that long ago that said that children whose initials spell a negative word (BUM, BAD, SAD, etc.) live three-years less on average than children whose initials do not spell a word.

On the other hand, children whose initials spell a positive word (ACE, GO, WIN, etc.) live five-years longer, on average than children whose initials do not spell a word.

The article and the included study didn't, unfortunately contain any information to children whose initials spell neutral words like sew . . . but, since it's not a negative word, I don't see any reason you should avoid it.

  • They don't bother me unless they spell something obscene (our last name starts with a "K," so I am very conscious of not having initials like ***).

My own initials are ASK and DD's are ACK. In most monogramming, the last name initial is in the middle anyway, so you rarely see it spelling the word itself.

  • The bump edited me! Ha! The example I gave above is that I would never name a child Francisco Ulysses K.....

  • SEW wouldn't bother me at all... I was SES (maiden name), and now I'm SEE -- kind of funny, since I'm pretty blind without my contacts!

Growing up, my brother latched on to the initials idea and told me I had to find a husband whose last name started with X so I'd be SEX.

  • My mom was BAM before she got married and she tells me she loved it. I think SEW is cute.
  • I think that word initials are fine as long as they won't result in a terrible nickname... (e.g. PEE, BUTT, DIK, SUK, POO...)

  • I had a friend whose son's initials were XAQ, but he went by "zac."
  • Our last name begins with "G," and before I met DH, my dream little girl name was Frances Adele (after my grandmother, and a name I love love love)... with a "G" last name, that was an immediate no-go.

  • With my married name my initials spell HO...I have gotten some comments on that, but it isn't a big deal. And HO is bad...but SEW isn't a big deal. Go for it. (it would only be cheesy if it were deliberate)
  • My husband's initials are WAM and I love it.  I make comic book sounds anytime I see him with his LLBean monogrammed briefcase.  I'd like to use the initials for one of our kids.  I think it's a neat way to not name a kid after my husband but still honor him.

  • I was born a JAB. Hah! Honestly, the only time I ever noticed was when I would have to enter my initials into an arcade game "hi-score" like at Chuck-E-Cheese...then I thought I was awesome for having a word as my name.

  • My sister and I were both "KEG". And yes, our parents let me put it on my backpack (in elementary and middle school) and kids would ask if I had any beer. I had no idea what they were talking about. I learned to embrace it as I got older and now I kind of miss it :)

Oh ya, and totally unintentional, but DS's monogram is "BMW" :)

  • I was born a "JAM" and got married and became "JAR." If we have a girl (someday?), she will be "MAR." I was never a huge fan of JAM growing up, but as an adult, I've kind of let it go.

  • My initials are JARS and it doesn't bother me. I wouldn't think twice about the initials SEW, if your LN started with an X that would be a different story ;)
  • My married initial our P.M.S. so S.E.W. doesn't bother me. I think as long as it isn't anything bad then it is fine. Our newest little ones initial are going to be W.E.S.
