Trouble TTC

intro

Hi Ladies!  I'd like to introduce myself.  My husband and I have been ttc for 8 months.  I haven't gotten a real period (without provera) since going off of the pill.  I have been charting for 4 months and haven't ovulated.  I am scheduled to start clomid next month and am really hoping that helps get things going.  I'm a lurker on TGP and am thinking it's a good time to move on over here :)

Re: intro

  • Welcome and good luck to you! I do have to ask, are you going to be monitored? Are you seeing an RE or just your ob/gyn?

Make sure they monitor you, and it might be good to have b/w and other testing to see if they can find the cause of why you don't ovulate.

    Welcome :)

So, I have to ask, have you had all your testing done before moving on to clomid?  Were you dx with anything? (do they know why you don't have your period)

    This.

Also, has your husband had an SA?  Any medicene or IUIs would have been a waste of our money if we had done anything before the SA results.

  • Thanks for your thoughts.  I'm not exactly sure what is happening at my appointment next month.  The nurse said I'd be starting clomid, but I'm not sure if my ob/gyn is going to be doing anything else before this.  My husband hasn't had an SA yet...I was kind of thinking the opposite (which may be dumb..)  that we have no idea if there is a problem beyond not ovulating.  I'll be sure and ask these questions when I go in.  I really appreciate your advice ladies!
  • Welcome!
We jumped right to an RE (age and other Dx related)  but I surely know how it feels to be with a doc who is "goal" focused instead of "inquiry" focused.  As in, let's just pump you with meds and do an IUI without figuring out what is actually going on.  Luckily I realized it before we got too far (just don't ask how much we shelled out for Femara)
Anyhow, these ladies are a wise bunch and have strong feelings b/c of experience!
    Good luck at your appt.

We're not trying to be mean, we just see so many horror stories of people going to OB's, taking clomid and having issues. There are only so many times you can take clomid in your life. The majority of specialists say 6 times (though I've heard randomly up to a year). If you have other issues and are not aware, you could be wasting your time and money.

If you take it and it thins your lining (like it did mine my last two cycles) you won't stand a chance. If you don't have an ultrasound monitoring to see this, then you'll have no idea. Or what if you get cysts that become so bad you have to have surgery? Or maybe become the next octomom?

My point is, you should check to see if your hormones are off, if you have blocked tubes, and if your husband has any issues before starting anything.  THEN, once you start clomid, you should be properly monitored with blood work and ultrasounds

I wish someone had the link to the horror story someone told us about taking clomid unmonitored

I don't think you're being mean at all!  This is definitely some new information to me.  That makes a lot of sense.  I already feel like I will be much more prepared to discuss things with my doctor.

  • Welcome to the board!  I agree with the other girls that you should get testing done and then be monitored on the clomid.  Its not really a horror story, but my sister was having longish, but normal cycles.  Her ob put her on clomid and the only monitoring they did was checking her progesterone on cd21.  She went through 4 rounds of clomid and then was referred to an RE.  I convinced her to chart her temps off clomid and sure enough, she ovulated on cd26 and got pg that cycle.  The cd21 bloodwork was well before she ever O'd on clomid.  I do think your story is slightly different and clomid probably would be a great place to start, but you still need to get testing done to figure out WHY you are not O'ing and getting AF.  Good luck to you and keep us updated.
