High-Risk Pregnancy

Type 2 Numbers??

I am 31 weeks with type 2 diabetes... I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes 5 years before I got pregnant and with diet and exercise I had got rid of it for 2 years prior to getting pregnant. Once I became pregnant the diabetes came right back. I have been on Metformin 1000 mg 2X a day and NPH at night.. and now I have noticed my sugars after meals are starting to creep up. Up until yesterday they have been fine. Nothing higher than 110 the entire pregnancy. Then all day yesterday they were after breakfast 119, after lunch 136 and then after dinner 139 (2 hrs after meals). How long before I should call the doctor and tell them my numbers are higher than normal?

Re: Type 2 Numbers??

  • Maybe you just had an off day, but it wouldn't hurt to call now if you're worried.  I test 1 hour after meals, so I'm not sure what your 2 hour numbers mean, or what your doctor wants you to keep them under, but if those numbers are significantly higher than your range, I'd call now.  If they're just a bit high, I'd see how today goes, and if they're still high, definitely call.

I have GD, not Type 2, but FWIW, my MFM practice told me to call if I get a pattern of numbers beyond the range, not just a couple (since things like high stress and hormone surges can cause high numbers, too).

  • I'm Type 1, but my high risk doctor told me that the farther along you get in pregnancy ther more insulin resistant we become, therefore we need more medication.  I would watch it another day or so, then call if it keeps creeping up.

  • I have gestational diabetes, or possibly undiagnosed Type 2, and my high-risk OB wants my blood sugars to be below 130 one hour after meals. When in doubt, it never hurts to call the doctor.
  • I have Type 2 but was diagnosed a very short amount of time before getting pregnant, just a few weeks.  I was immediately put on insulin after confirming pregnancy and two hours after meals, I need to be 120 or less.  If for more than a day, I'd give them a call.  I know that some people can go thru most of the pregnancy on their regular pills but get switched in insulin near the end.

  • A quick call to the office would never hurt.  Did you eat lots of carbs at a meal?  Do you see endo??  If  not, you probably should.  I have been seeing endo since about 8 weeks gestation- I have been type 2 for about 5 years.  I don't know how you can handle taking metformin while pregnant!
