Isla alternate spelling?

To save myself from throat punching people who continue to pronounce this name "Iz-la", I would like to 'hear' your thoughts on alternate spellings of this name.

I can handle Ila, because of Iris, Irene, etc. But is it silly (b/c it looks silly to me)?

Re: Isla alternate spelling?

  • Eyla is the only other accepted spelling variant and it's far less common. I'm not certain that it doesn't come with its own various mispronunciations, though.

Also, Isla has recently sky-rocketed in popularity. Given a year or two most people are going to have met a little Isla, therefore, most people will soon know how the name is pronounced. It might just be a matter of waiting it out.

This exactly. I wouldn't use a misspelling of a name to avoid correcting people anyway. Your name could be Mary and somebody out there will screw it up. My maiden ln was short and simple, 4 letters, as phonetic as could be, and you would not believe how many different pronunciations people came up with instead.

  • There's a very sweet little girl at my preschool named Eisla, I love that spelling!  : )
  • Don't do Ila: that's asking for even more trouble. It looks like a typo, especially in a sans serif font ? as if someone left the E off of Ella.
  • I wouldn't purposely spell my child's name wrong just to make it easier for people who don't know better. Either be willing to take two seconds to correct someone, or pick a different name. Like pp mentioned, Isla has grown in popularity in recent years. You may not have as many issues as you think.

  • Actually there IS another spelling: Ila. It's actually an Old French spelling of the name. :) This is what my husband wants to name our daughter. He found it on a list of old names. It peaked in like 1880 on the charts.

This and I also agree with strangebird. Please don't get cre8ive and give your kid a hack job version of the name Isla. It's four letters, and given a year everyone will now how to pronounce it. If not, it's an easy correction. Most introductions are spoken anyway.

Don't dumb down a lovely name because of other people's lack of knowledge.

  • I went to school with an Ayla, which I always thought was such a pretty name.  At the time I hadn't heard of the name Isla, but it was pronounced the same way.
