registry questions...

hi hi hi =)

i have a few questions.

did you guys register for things that you would use after baby is 6+ months? like sippy cups, teething stuff, jumpers, etc.

did you register for clothes? i figure no because people will be giving us tons of these...

also, what can you use second hand? i know we want a new car seat. but my sister i think is gonna give us her used high chair. she says she has other stuff too, but i'm not sure what else she's planning on giving us. thanks!

Re: registry questions...

  • We didn't end up registering for anything 6+ months and we didn't register for clothes either. Most guests didn't purchase from the registry so we ended up getting lots of clothes, bibs, hooded towels, etc. We also got a PnP & jumper, which we didn't register for. I also got a grooming/1st aid kit but other than the nail clipper, it ended up being redundant because we got a syringe bulb, comb, thermometer from the hospital for free. I use the nail clipper religiously twice a week--their nails grow so fast!

We have a lot of 2nd-hand clothes too. We also use a 2nd-hand tub, stroller, diaper pail, ergo carrier (but I also bought a new one already), bassinet, and swing. The bassinet was only useful for the first 3 months for so at most since it's only for when they're really small. LO doesn't really like the swing that much so I'm glad we didn't get a new one cuz we've only used it twice. We were going to use a 2nd-hand high chair too but it's missing the restraint system, so for safety reasons, I decided to purchase a new one, which I'm still currently shopping for...

  • I agree about the nail clipper!  I actually just bought a second one so I can keep one at home and one in the diaper bag (when we're out and about and he falls asleep in the carseat is the easiest time to do it for me!). I do use the brush from the grooming kit every night (a must, as his hair is crazy if I don't brush it down after a bath), but the rest of the grooming kit was a waste.  I, too, got everything else at the hospital for free.

I did register for cups, bowls, spoons, etc., and did get actually them.  Other than that, people mostly didn't buy off our registry.  I did put a few clothes on there, but didn't receive any of them....lots of other clothes, though.  And hooded towels....yikes!  Tons!  Looking back, I might have put a jumper or something like that.  Even though you don't need it right away, holy cow, time flies!  I can't believe we're already buying one!

  • we did register for some sippy cups and stuff like that, jumperoo, all the big things.  You just have to store them for awhile :)   and remember, you usually get a discount off the stuff you registered for if nobody else bought it and you go in for it (usually a one-time deal)

we did not register for clothes - yes, you generally get plenty.  :)

I would say new car seat and crib, but everything else is ok second hand as long as you check for recalls and stuff.  we are using a second hand high chair, and my mom found a second hand swing for $10 at a yard sale.

Did you pick up Baby Bargains yet?  That was the best book for registry stuff - a little overwhelming at first, but has really great info.

  • I registered for some feeding supplies (Beaba freezer trays) and larger sized CDs that I thought might be hard to find second hand.

We bought used or got hand-me-downs for most things -- clothes, books, toys, infant carriers, a stroller, changing table, bassinet, PnP, swing/jumperoo, bath, and most other accessories. The main things I bought new for baby were the car seats, crib and a jogging stroller I scored on sale. If the stuff's still in good condition, go for it. Your LO won't know the difference!

  • We registered for a couple things post 6+ months but that's because my mom and sister are planning a big baby shower. I wouldn't have otherwise. Also, I registered for one outfit so (if people look at the registry) they can get a feeling of my "style." Either way, I think people will just buy the clothes they want anyhow Stick out tongue I would definitely say items that are used in small time frames (like bouncers) are a good thing to get second hand.

  • I did - but only the bigger ticket items (jumper, high chair, stroller, baby gate, a few toys for 6+mo).

I did end up getting almost everything off the registry but I think that is because I had a very large baby shower with people I don't really know that well (given by my SILs/held out of state) AND we were team green.  I didn't register for clothes and didn't get any at that shower.  But then my family held a baby welcoming party after J was born and we got TONS of clothes so I'm thinking if we had known the gender before he was born we would have gotten more clothes??

ETA: what can you use second hand?  Almost anything!  (I personally wouldn't take a used breast pump and you shouldn't use a second car seat unless it's not expired AND you know it's history and it wasn't in a crash).

Almost all clothes that were not gifted to us have come from consignment sales or thrift shops.  My mom and I bought lots of the duplicate stuff that she keeps at her house second hand.  I found a space saver high chair for her for only $4 at the goodwill.  She has a more expensive lightweight stroller than me because I found a Maclaren Quest on CL for $30.  I regularly find sleep sacks at the goodwill for $1-3.  We buy books and some toys second hand.
