Help! Baby-led weaning?

Can someone explain this to me?  I've heard of it - I know it's about skipping purees, but that's all.  We were thinking of starting DD on cereal sometime next month and when we went to the store the other we had a pretty big shock.  There are no baby cereals in Japan.  There are few purees in Japan - and what they have are VERY expensive and all mixes, no single veggies or fruit.  It seems they take a baby-led weaning approach and now I'm clueless about how to start weaning our daughter.  Would it be safe to make our own baby food if we can't read any of the food lables here?  I certainly don't want to give her anything with additives, sugars, salt, etc.

But baby-led weaning is basically starting with real foods. The first year is just for exploring and learning about food as most of baby's calories come from BM or formula anyway.

It's easy & it's been great. I don't have to spend time making purees or spoon feeding my baby. For the most part my 8 month old eats on his own while I eat. Tonight he had asparagus, potatoes & chicken right from my plate.

We started with one thing at a time. And they recommend fist size pieces so they are easier to handle. He does sometimes gag, but #1 gagged on chunky purees. It's just the process of learning.

Here's a site by Dr. Rapley and this is the book that was sent to me & will be the one for the giveaway.
