Breastfeeding

Help me do this right..

I'm going to have to start pumping enough for my husband to keep our girls for a few hours, one or two days a week. I assumed the best time to pump was after they finished nursing, however, I'm only getting about an ounce total (that's pumping both sides).

Am I pumping at the wrong time? I don't want to take supply away from the girls during their nursing session by pumping before. So, is it just that they empty me out? If so, how am I going to successfully pump?

Re: Help me do this right..

  • that is a normal output. you can have a great supply and not pump much (like me) just add a few sessions in a day and try not to stress over it (that can affect supply).

  • 1 oz after feeding is about typical.  What most women do is pump while the babies are being fed out of the house:  so you would pump while your husband is out with your girls.  That's what working moms do:  they pump for the next day.

Pumping after feeding is a good way to build an initial stash.  You can also try pumping between feedings, but yes, you risk not having as much when they are ready to eat.

If I were you I would keep doing what you're doing, try to find some time in between feedings if you can, but plan on pumping while your husband is out with your girls.

  • I find that my supply is always highest in the morning and that is also when DD's appetite is lowest (if I give her a pumped bottle, she'll only eat about 2 oz where the rest of the day is about 3-3.5).
