I am going to be 24 weeks pregnant next Sunday and as of today from the beginning of my twin pregnancy I have gained 10 pounds. I keep reading that average weight gain for twins is 1 1/2lbs a week after the first three months. This would make me under. My doctor has not said anything and at my level 2 ultrasound they commented the babies were growing perfect, but I am still concerned and was curious to what others have gained. I have been sick a lot with nasty MS so I hope I am getting enought nutrients. Please tell me what your experiences have been. Thanks ladies!!
Re: Twin Pregnancy Weight Gain?
i guess you have not read Dr. Luke's book? She recommends about 24lbs in 24weeks (or 20lbs in 20weeks)... so that you gain as much as possible in case you have preemies - they'll be as big as possible. Try to gain by eating healthy- lots of protein and dairy. She recommends milkshakes if regular dairy makes you feel sick -i liked that part - i had a LOT of milkshakes.
the only protein i could stand was chicken salad sandwiches - i ate a lot of those b/c all other protein made me feel sick.
some docs don't think that much weight gain is necessary- but my doc agreed with the book ... i TRIED to gain 24lbs in 24w and still only gained 19, even trying hard.
Since day 1 until now which I will be 25 weeks this Wednesday I have gained about 33 lbs so far and my doctor tells me that, thats a good weight and the babies are doing great. Every woman is different I guess but do get Dr. Luke's book "Twins, Multiples and Quads Healthy Eating book, the moms in this forum told me about it and it gives you several chapters on what to eat and how much to eat and gain. I think it's like 25 lbs of weight gain for the first 20 weeks, not sure. One of the moms on here Goldie did incredibly well following the book and she carried up to 38 weeks which is AWESOME! I am hoping I can do the same
PS: They also have several dinner/lunch recipes in the book as well that benefits twin and multiple pregnancies.
I have also read this, that the more weight you gain early on the better to help with early delivery weights, this is why I was worried. Yum, milkshakes I can do . I have been trying to drink a couple glasses of whole milk a day. To be honest I never thought I would have a hard time gaining weight, never had that problem before, but I also have never been sick so often. At this point I am praying everything is going to the babies. At my 20 wk level 2 U/S they both measured weighing a little over a pound each which they said was good if they kept at that rate. I feel big believe me, but its all out in front for sure.
FWIW, my OB thinks Dr. Luke is nuts and no one should eat as much as she prescribes.
I'm 30 wks today and have gained 33 pounds. I started off below "normal" BMI and by just modifying my exercise routine and not measuring my food (I was a calorie counter before) I easily gained about a pound a week.
You need to look not only at what you're carrying (i.e. twins), but where you started from as well. Eat healthy, make good choices and everything should be fine.
my ob also thinks this is nuts. at 28 weeks i had only gained 10 lbs and my babies were right on track for thier gestational age. babies will take what they need to grow no matter what you eat. your responsibility is to eat well and often.
