Twin Pregnancy Weight Gain?

I am going to be 24 weeks pregnant next Sunday and as of today from the beginning of my twin pregnancy I have gained 10 pounds. I keep reading that average weight gain for twins is 1 1/2lbs a week after the first three months. This would make me under. My doctor has not said anything and at my level 2 ultrasound they commented the babies were growing perfect, but I am still concerned and was curious to what others have gained. I have been sick a lot with nasty MS so I hope I am getting enought nutrients. Please tell me what your experiences have been. Thanks ladies!!

Re: Twin Pregnancy Weight Gain?

  • i guess you have not read Dr. Luke's book? She recommends about 24lbs in 24weeks (or 20lbs in 20weeks)... so that you gain as much as possible in case you have preemies - they'll be as big as possible.  Try to gain by eating healthy- lots of protein and dairy.  She recommends milkshakes if regular dairy makes you feel sick -i liked that part - i had a LOT of milkshakes.

the only protein i could stand was chicken salad sandwiches - i ate a lot of those b/c all other protein made me feel sick.

some docs don't think that much weight gain is necessary- but my doc agreed with the book ... i TRIED to gain 24lbs in 24w and still only gained 19, even trying hard.

  • Since day 1 until now which I will be 25 weeks this Wednesday I have gained about 33 lbs so far and my doctor tells me that, thats a good weight and the babies are doing great. Every woman is different I guess but do get Dr. Luke's book "Twins, Multiples and Quads Healthy Eating book, the moms in this forum told me about it and it gives you several chapters on what to eat and how much to eat and gain. I think it's like 25 lbs of weight gain for the first 20 weeks, not sure. One of the moms on here Goldie did incredibly well following the book and she carried up to 38 weeks which is AWESOME! I am hoping I can do the same :)

PS: They also have several dinner/lunch recipes in the book as well that benefits twin and multiple pregnancies.

  • I have also read this, that the more weight you gain early on the better to help with early delivery weights, this is why I was worried. Yum, milkshakes I can do :). I have been trying to drink a couple glasses of whole milk a day. To be honest I never thought I would have a hard time gaining weight, never had that problem before, but I also have never been sick so often. At this point I am praying everything is going to the babies. At my 20 wk level 2 U/S they both measured weighing a little over a pound each which they said was good if they kept at that rate. I feel big believe me, but its all out in front for sure.

  • I am going to get this book on the way home after work. Thanks ladies!!
  • Also know that it's possible to gain less weight and still have healthy babies. I was only able to gain 25 lbs and delivered my guys via scheduled c-section at 37 weeks. They weighed 5 lbs 13 oz and 5 lbs 10 oz, no NICU time.

FWIW, my OB thinks Dr. Luke is nuts and no one should eat as much as she prescribes.

I'm 30 wks today and have gained 33 pounds. I started off below "normal" BMI and by just modifying my exercise routine and not measuring my food (I was a calorie counter before) I easily gained about a pound a week.

You need to look not only at what you're carrying (i.e. twins), but where you started from as well. Eat healthy, make good choices and everything should be fine.

my ob also thinks this is nuts.  at 28 weeks i had only gained 10 lbs and my babies were right on track  for thier gestational age. babies will take what they need to grow no matter what you eat.  your responsibility is to eat well and often.

  • Ok I feel a little better now. I have always had to really watch my weight or it would get out of control. So to be honest prior to getting pregnant I always worried about how much weight I would gain and not wanting to just eat what I wanted with that thought of I am eating for more, like one of you said the babies take what they need, so the idea of eating for two or more actually isnt the case. I have not heard of this book, but am always looking for healthy high protein recipes. I get frustrated at lunch at work because I am avoiding processed foods and I use to eat Weight Watcher Smart Ones, they didnt taste bad and were fast and low cal, but I wont eat those now. So I look for dinner ideas that would leave leftovers. I also look for ideas to pack my husband, sandwiches just get old. So if anyone has recipes pass them down :). I try and watch my salt in take, so far my BP is perfect and I watch my sugar intake to try and prevent diabetes issues later on in my pregnancy. So far today I ate breakfast, a bowl of fiber 1 cereal and some fresh fruit. For lunch I brought some homemade veggie chili I made over the weekend. I have some trail mix to snack on and cheese for this afternoon and then dinner is beef short ribs, asparagus and a baked potato. I feel full all the time and feel like I am eating healthy. I have my appt next Monday and I will get my drs feedback too. Thank you all for your comments.
  • I just had my twins last Sunday at 37 weeks 4 days, sceduled csection and I gained 24lbs Total. Babies were 6lbs 11oz and 5lbs. I was 160 lbs pre pregnancy weight. No morning sickness at all, but I was all belly never put weight on anywhere else. I was a nervous wreck the babies were gonna be so tiny cause I didnt gain much weight.

  • I started out at 130 lbs and gained 35 lbs. I purposely did not read dr. luke's book, just practiced good eating habits and exercised for as long as I could. My twins were born at 37w,5d and were very healthy at 7lbs, 3oz and 5lbs, 7oz. Don't stress yourself out about gaining X amount in X weeks. Your babies will take what they need from you.
  • My OB also thinks the Dr Luke weight recs are a little out of whack. I started a little overweight. I have put on 6 lbs total and am 32 weeks. My babies each weigh 4 1/2 lbs and they guess they will weigh well over 6 lbs at their scheduled delivery (37 weeks). I think if you're eating healthy, and taking care of yourself, the babies get what they need. My doc suggested 2200 calories a day and I did try to adhere to that but it was never rigorous diet.
